KarenCee
I chose Delta because I've flown with them more. I don't mind going through Boston either. smile.gif

I've heard good things about Virgin Atlantic. How can you not love an airline owned by Richard Branson? smile.gif
Kajikit
I've only flown Qantas and Air New Zealand. Of the two, Qantas has much better-equipped planes (the ANZ plane didn't even have seatback televisions, just the old-fashioned dropdown ones, and for a 14 hour flight that doesn't cut it!) However the food on ANZ is better and the older planes have more legroom smile.gif

Oh man how could I forget good old CX! Sorry bout that smile.gif
Cathay Pacific is still ranked as the #1 airline in the world

I'm kind of fond of Continental. Firstly becuase I used to work for them, but also becuase they usually have the best fares, houston is a pretty easy transfer, and last time I flew, they utterly took care of me, from the time I stepped to the ticket counter until I got off the plane.
Mermaid
I choose other for Cathy Pacific. They were great when I took it alone with my infant and preschooler at the time. The employees were so helpful. Two wonderful female employees helped me a lot with my children and baggage on my first trip with them. My kids also had a great time on the plane.

First time I travelled to the US we used Air Canada.

Second time I came here I flew with Northwest....yuck no0pb.gif I had major headaches for a month after I flew with them. Roger used them to fly to Nova Scotia to see me and he had major headaches after flying with them. So we have not flown with them again. I think there planes are old and makes to many noises like its going to fall apart. yes.gif

When I moved here in May I flew with Delta. Really liked them.

Roger flew with Continental when he came to Nova Scotia the second time. He really like their service yes.gif

My POE was Boston when I moved here. It was really fast and easy to get thru. I was there at 8 am thou. So not to much going on when our plane pulled in. biggrin.gif

huh.gif That what I liked about Northwest. Their planes make NOISE! Besides, I got a really good deal from them and they were just as nice and polite as any other airline.

Delta is nice too, the only thing I don't like about them is having to connect in Boston. But if immigration there is easy, then that is probably where I'll go. I just don't like the airport in Boston.
ladybutterfly
Definately Virgin Atlantic again! Their in flight entertainment is the best you can get, certainly makes the flight time go by quicker.

British airways... good.gif

PIA...when going from pakistan.
I loved the flight and the inflight service.

First time I used American (ok service) then I used Continental (didnt like at all) this time we are using Virgin because my mum paid for the flights because she had miles to spend

Branson needs his head shaken. He told Al Stewart in 1975 that he didn't think he was commercial enough.....His next album was Year of the Cat. kicking.gif

My experiences with flying.

Air Canada: Decent leg room on some flights, a bit cramped on others. English/French instructions no matter what part of the country you're in. Meals are good. Movies are alright. Aeroplan frequent flyer program is probably the best. Lots of check-in staff to get you booked in quickly. Frequent flyer credit cards are CIBC or American Express.

America West: The worse airline ever!!! Zero legroom and I mean zero, no movie, no food, neither of the bathrooms would flush (found out after doing #2....had to wrap my hand in toilet paper and quickly poke the metal flap down) no blankets on board (they're based in Phoenix) so they have to turn up the cabin heat to warm people up (too hot and stuffy for my tastes). Generally cheaper, but not worth it to me. I will probably never fly with them again. On the plus side, getting out in Phoenix feels wonderful.

Delta: Only flew with them once, but they had a tall ceiling which meant I didn't have to stand up with my head tilted while waiting to exit.

American Airlines: They give you a lunch bag as you board. No need to wait for food. Don't have to worry about sleeping through the meals. They say they eliminated 2 rows to make more leg room. It's alright, not great for leg room. They could eliminate 2 more rows and I would be fine with it.

EDIT: Things have changed with America Airlines. They put the seats back in and now you can buy your meal if you're in coach.

Continental: Seem to have the most direct flights of all the airlines I've flown with. Generally the cheapest or near the cheapest. Long lines to check in though. They give 1000 bonus miles for buying your ticket through their website, so their frequent flyer program lets you earn miles quick buying airline tickets. But they don't have the selection of non-airline mile options that Aeroplan has. Frequent flyer credit card is Chase.

My favourites have to be Continental and Air Canada. The worst being America West. American Airlines and Delta are ho hum.

I've yet to fly Southwest. I find their prices can't compare with the regular airlines.

Lufthansa, Delta, United, or AA.
Actually, I really don't care as long as I'm alive at the end of the flight. I am terrifed of flying!

What about Aeroflot since you're Russian?

I used british airways... Direct from London to Denver
Lou Lou
I only use US Air simply because they are the easiest route for me through Philly. I always upgrade tho and would never fly cattle class with them...it looks hideous back there! They have a great arrivals lounge with private showers which are perfect when you get off an overnight flight. I've also flown Virgin a lot, cattle and Upper class, and I really can't fault them at all. Their limo service and food is fab good.gif
Cassie
When Jerry and I were dating, we primarily used Air Canada and their affiliates, or Continental.

Since we've been married, we've been using American Airlines, and signed up with their frequent flyer program and flyer points credit card to build up the flyer points. Their service has always been quite good and the rates (if you go on their website and take the time to price out various routes) are usually quite decent.

raphael7546
Usually Southwest . Price is cheap.
First time flying with delta from Vancouver BC, felt like I was in a tin can. Was horrible. ( another reason why I used to go down to seattle and fly Southwest instead. ) This last time that I flew down here with Delta was great ! Had my 2 cats on board and my daughter.
my daughter flies Delta for visits cuz they have the "childrens escort program" for kids who fly alone.
On her trip here at Christmas they didn't have room for her in coach so she went first class. She raved about that flight the whole time she was here. They even offered her Lobster for dinner but she chose chicken fingers instead ! LOL tongue.gif
tom&tata
United now because it has direct flight into OHare from Singapore (with only short plane change in Hongkong). Got upgraded to Economy plus which is plenty leg room. Can't complain.

Was Northwest when I lived in the Netherlands, also because of direct flight to OHare.

Scott & Lai
Cathay Pacific good.gif

AA have always been great to me whenever I use them - plus its one of the few direct flights to RDU from London - the food is reasonable the movies are good and the legroom is good too. Also that flight is pretty empty (apart from once I went in August it was FULL which I didnt like so much, lol) so I can move seats and stretch out.
Will be trying their sister airline (I think they are connected anyways, lol) 'US Airways' soon and have never used them.
Used Virgin once to Florida that flight was good too - just a bit crowded.
Continental I flew bewtween Hawaii and LA and it was a bit cramped.

USAir are not affiliated with AA in any way so don't expect such a good service. Generally I read nothing but complaints about USAir which is why I only fly them upgraded, and they have the easiest route for me.

The only good thing I've noticed is they're often pretty empty so there is plenty of room to stretch out. My last flight with them on 2/14 was only 11 people in first, and 74 up back!

Flyertalk.com is a great resource for regular flyers who want to build up miles for upgrades etc, and orbtiz.com is good for seeing how full your flight is in advance.
germangel
I'm normally flying Delta because they are very often the cheapest choice so I started collecting miles with them. But my hubbie used to take continental, until they had bad service, his TV didn't word and he wrote a complaint and didn't get any refund just a "sorry, dude"
ChristinaM
I like Continental, they've been nothing but helpful and pleasant, their food is not as bad as some others (cough cough BA cough cough) and their fares are decent.
CarolineM
Qantas ... only flown united or qantas to Oz and I HATED United
CherryXS
I voted British Airways (decided by adding the qualifier "from outside North America"), which I found decent on three flights (ATL-LGW, LGW-ATL, LHR-MAA).

For entry from Canada, Delta used to be preferred (as I have an AmEx Optima mileage card with them) till they reduced flights on SLC-YYC sector--after which its split between American (generally good connexions to YYC through DFW) or Northwest (through MSP).

Pras will be using Lufthansa (I guess OK for her one-time) of which I have some hesitation (due to its partnership/codesharing with United--an airline which I will go out-of-the-way to avoid, due to bad experiences in 2001) for her entry to DTW; deciding factor in this was the fact that it has straight-in connexions to Hyderabad.

IMO, no US airline will ever be suitable for trips outside North America, due to several flights from Delta:
  • Dec. 1999 ATL-LGW (due to their then-codeshare-partner Sabena messing up my ATL-MAA reservation); bag misplaced due to their wrong assumption that it would be auto-transferred without customs clearance to Heathrow departing flight
  • Jan 2000 Brussels-Atlanta (Sabena codeshare with Delta aircraft)--SAME BAG misplaced
  • JFK-MAA (and corresponding return) May 2005--bad experience at CDG (due to French mentality--who else would stop the aircraft 2 km away when there are empty gate-tubes available?)

Don't think she will have any problems with Lufthansa. They are an excellent airline, and are NOT United.
I won't fly United simply because their fares are some of the most expensive out there.

Crossing the border coming into Canada is much easier in Calgary than Vancouver. In Calgary, your plane goes to the customs people directly. So there is at max 5 people in front of you in line at customs. Friendly atmosphere.

In Vancouver, everybody from everywhere in the world goes to customs at the same time and boy is it busy. Typically an hour standing on your feet in line.
Mr. Big Dog
Lufthansa (if their pilots aren't on strike) is really nice. Had very good flights on Ethiopian Airlines - funny as it may seem. I also like Air France - can't beat the cute accents of that flight staff... wink.gif

For international flights on US based airlines: Continental. yes.gif

Northwest/KLM alwaysss takes good care of me!

Singapore airlines for me good.gif They have great foods, great services (blankets, socks and toothbrushes for overnight flights in economy class), and I really loooovvvee their entertainment systems: your own personal screen, with plenty of movies, short films and even video games for kids !!

Flew with Northwest couple of times, and they DO suck !!! I ended up getting transferred to SQ anyway during my flight to US wacko.gif

What didn't you like about NWA?
wally
We don't have much of a choice...NWA only from here to Ontario. Planes are noisy but generally positive experience.
My favourite though is Westjet. In flight TV, staff have a share in the airline (I asked) so they real helpful, seats are leather and wide, lots of space and they never overbook.
KarenCee
My experience with Air Canada wasn't too bad...in flight tv, nice seats - roomy, staff was pleasant, but had to buy snacks or food. I'd fly them again. smile.gif

From what I hear that's rare smile.gif
The only other airline I've flown internationally was Delta, and it was a positive experience other than having to connect in Boston. Seems the airport has improved since.
Consensus is that Westjet is the best of the canadian airlines. Karen flew Continental once and it was good.
We have flown AirTran from Atlanta to Savannah and that was NOT a positive experience. They were rude and extremely slow with our luggage.
The reason I chose Northwest over Delta is because their terminal in Detroit is GREAT! And they still fly the DC-9 which is old, comfortable though. But it is quite loud. For some reason, the louder the aircraft is, the easier I sleep on them.

Cheap fares too; almost always a substantial amount cheaper than the rest to the western U.S.

But no direct flight to OHare. I don't like airport transfer at all esp. travelling alone. Might try it when travelling back to Indonesia with hubby.

I won't fly United simply because their fares are some of the most expensive out there.

Admittedly, Lufthansa's fare (for HYD-Frankfurt-DTW) was only marginally worse than a BOM-LHR-DTW fare from British Airways (but it was much more convenient for Pras to leave from Hyderabad than Mumbai).

Also true that United charges outrageous fares.

A sample of Atlanta-Calgary return fares in August 1997 (all supposed to be cheapest rate--these were the actual quotes I got):
  • Delta $397
  • AA $421
  • Northwest $417
  • Air Canada $562 (only for comparison; at the time I was on a TN-1 and AC's route left me at risk of stranding)
  • United $1,750

And for further comparison, fares from travel agencies, same timeframe:
  • Atlanta-Mumbai $975
  • Atlanta-Chennai $1,130
  • Atlanta-Gatwick $491

For United's quoted "lowest rate pretzel-class" fare, I could easily have taken BUSINESS CLASS on Delta, Northwest or AA!
canadalaura
I always fly Delta - but I've never really had to go thru customs in an airport as I used to live so close to buffalo airport that i would just drive over and do the customs thang at the border - way less hassle.

I have found that I get pretty good fares from Delta, and when I was flying from Japan a couple times their food didn't make me completely gag, entertainment was good, and it felt like they had more leg room than Northwest (yuck!) and AA (so so)

Yes, Singapore is nice on those fronts. Unfortunately, they only fly from SFO, YVR and LAX--all on the wrong side of the continent.

Would a (some airline) domestic flight to the west coast not work (as you are essentially in the middle of the continent)?

British Airways good.gif -great Frequent Flyer Program ( the whole household can combine miles) and the trip from Dallas to London Gatwick ( flown it alot wacko.gif ) so is much easier than the other airlines into Heathrow!

I hated Detroit airport. Its to big for one, and way to many people in the lines. I was there by myself one time changing planes from Atlanta. I near had a breakdown. I couldnt find my way around and it took me forever to get to my next gate for the flight. I had to go thru that tunnel alone and that creeped me out. I will never go thru there again. Thats the airport that questioned me about coming to visist Roger when our K-1 was going on too. Over all it was just a scary experience for me. I think mainly becasue I was alone. If that makes me a whimp, then I am a whimp yes.gif
