Hi Everyone!
Quick question that I can't find an answer to in Guidelines...

Can I translate my marriage certificate myself if I am capable of doing it?? If not, does anyone know a translator in Chicago? Does the certification of the translation have to be signed in front of a notary?

Also, although there is no mention of this in the instructions, do I have to send my husband's birth certificate?

THanks,

Molly

You need to send proof of your husbands US citizenship....birth certificate or passport....or a copy of his naturalization cerificate if he is a naturalized USC.

I am not sure re the translation.

Its not clear by your thread title and post as to what stage you are referring to and you have no timeline to go by. Are you talking of the I-130 petition for initial filing at a service center, the packet from NVC, or the Visa Interview packet at consulate level?

Translations do not need to be done by a certified translator, only by someone that is conversant in the both the english and foreign language and will certify to that when doing the translations. See HERE. If you are at consulate level, some consulates do like them done by a certified translator so you would need to check with your specific consulate.

Oh, sorry. I haven't submitted anything yet...I'm trying to get the I-130 packet together for initial filing.
Oh, and I'm American, my husband is Ecuadorian and lives in Italy.

Thanks everyone!

Molly

The birth certificate is not required of the beneficiary. But, an adjudicator always has the option to request one if they deem it necessary. It isn't going to hurt to submit a photocopy of it and may be beneficial especially when it comes to the background checks.
