I guess it happens all the time. Does everybody go and pick up their fiance's and help them to pass immigration? Should I go back down and escort my Spanish speaking fiance? Do I need to be there? It is the holiday season and plane fares are more than doubled. Any suggestions? Is the system set up so fiances can cross easily? John

I travelled to meet my fiance when she came here.

However, I have had professional colleagues who spoke essentially no English travel to work in our laboratories. I'm thinking of one Russian woman in particular, who's English is even worse than my Russian. (Now that's saying a lot!)

When she entered by herself at JFK, the inspecting officer asked her questions she could not understand. She could say, slowly, in English, "I do not understand." and then was mute until a Russian translator was located. She then answered all questions, was admitted, and spent two fruitful weeks in our laboratories. She was very wise not to try to guess and answer, because apparently the POE was being a bit tricky with her.

A spanish speaker should have an easier time, since spanish translators are more common, especially at certain Points of Entry.

Just make sure that she can keep her cool and that she refuses to answer any question that she does not understand., and that she asks for a translator.

Do you speak spanish?

Maybe others will have more specifically helpful advice.

With spanish she should have no poroblems. There are spanish translators all over the place. She will have to get from the international section of whatever airport you are talking about to the domestic flight she will be taking to you. She can ask the translator where the plane is. In certain parts of this country she might be better off than you language wise.

My fiance is flying into JFK and taking a domestic to WPB from Moscow. I am confident she will make it since she has flown to several other foreign countries on her own.
