I am in Canada now. I have already done my fingerprinting at the RCMP and sent it to be processed in Ottawa. I just got it all back and everything is fine. Clean record. Can I use it? I haven't been told to do it yet by the US Consulate. Someone told me a few months ago to get it done because it may take some time to process them.

I read a post beofore from someone in Canada. The post says you can go to your local police station and get a criminal record check in 15 minutes.
MissStacey
Yes, the background check is done right away at the RCMP station. The fingerprinting is done there but is then sent to Ottawa to be processed through the Data bank. I did it, sent it and got it back. My question is if it is fine to use because the US Immigration have not told me to get this done yet.

Where are you in the process? Have any forms been submittted yet?

Generally, a background/name check from the RCMP is required at the interview stage. If you're just starting, that could be 6 months to a year from now. A fingerprint check, on the other hand, is only required if you have convictions in your past.

Police certificates are probably good for one year. Hope you didn't get something too soon.

There's a new digital machine, in Toronto, I believe, that speeds up the fingerprint check. But you never needed fingerprints anyway. It's better to take this whole process step by step.

Thanks Jersey Girl. I guess it doesn't hurt to have it for my records. I think my file is at the State department and will be transferred to a US Consulate in Canada. I have no idea. smile.gif

Which type of visa is it? Are you a fiancee or a spouse? If your case is at the NVC, you should be getting Package 3.
MissStacey
I am already married. We got married in June. We sent in our I 130, I came to Canada for a visit and was denied reentry. My I 130 is approved now, and my husband sent in the I 824 so my file will be sent to a Consulate in Canada. So now, I have no idea what happens next and when.

If you fill in your timeline, people here could give better answers. We're curious:

Which country are you from? What is your citizenship?

When you "came to Canada for a visit," were you denied re-entry to the States? What was the reason?

Where were you married in June?

Where does your husband live?

When was your petition approved?

I'm going to guess you're a Canadian, going for the CR-1 visa (permanent immigrant) and you're waiting for an interview. If so, the average number of days between having your petition approved and going for the interview is 263.

One only requires fingerprinting if they have had a crimnal record in the past. otherwise its just a normal canada wide background search. Doen by the local RCMP detachment, if in GTA,the commisionares do it,and some local police do it as well, just ensure it is canada wide!! best of luck
MissStacey
That sucks. I wasted $100.00 getting that done.
