Ok good thing I didn't send in for my Canadian passport yet. I filed for my N-400 at the end of Oct 2 and a half months before my 3 year PR date at the Nebraska Service Center. In November got the biometrics done and then yesterday (Nov 30th) got my interview date set now for Jan 9th. Strange thing is that is one week before my actual 3 years is up. Not sure if this is common, I just figure if I pass then I just can't be naturalized that day and will have to wait till an oath ceremony at a later date.

Ok now the questions. They want a Gov't issued photo ID (besides a million other things), the only thing I have like that would be a drivers licence. Is that what they're talking about? Also they want 2 MORE passport photos, but said it's recommended but not required. Why would they want more and why would I spend another $8 to get another set if it's not required? Would that possibly be for a passport or something? If not, I'd rather save the $8 if I do not have to do it again (had to do it for the Canadian passport, and again for the N-400).

They also want all last 3 years tax records AGAIN. Ugh, and marriage certificates, copies and originals, all joint stuff that shows we're still married, and the usual. Didn't I just send all this crap in on the damn N-400 application? Why on earth can't they just use that? Either they want to torment me more or they're checking to see if people have gotten divorced since then.

Anyways that's the update and anyone that has just recently gone through this, I'd like to hear how it went. They stated it will be about 2 hours. That seems very long to me...

At my interview they just wanted my green card for ID. I didn't need to provide more photos, but then they didn't say they might need them. I know they use the photos directly on the naturalization certificate. I know it can be annoying, but I guess it's basically $8 versus the risk that they might have lost your photos and need more and there would be a delay.

I'm sure they are not looking to torment you, but I beleive generally people naturalizing based on marriage are required to bring evidence to the interview. It's just bureaucracy, nothing personal It won't be the interview that lasts 2 hours, it just depends how long they take to get to you. Good luck, it will be great to be finished with them

That's a good point, maybe I'll just get them done again and then again for a passport when (if I pass) needed. I know they need all the info again, it's just a pain in the ###, considering I swore I photocopied and kept everything from my I-751 I did a few months ago, but can't find anywhere. I did find all the crap I sent for my AOS years back, unfortunatly that no longer helps.

So do they keep your GC or do you keep it? I'm curious because inbetween getting a US passport I may need it to travel. Also do you get your SSN updated before you apply for a passport? Since you just happend to have gone through this recently ha ha...

I handed in my Green Card at the Oath Ceremony, and received my Naturalization Certificate the same day, so I was never document-less.

I changed my SSN relatively quickly after the citizenship ceremony, but only because my name changed (I held of changing my name after the wedding, b/c it seemed simpler.) I would update my SSN first, but realistically I don't think it matters, you keep the same number.

I've just heard that if you don't notify Social Security some places can call up and ask and then would not be able to verify you actually are a USC. I figure it's best to just take my naturalization papers in if I get them and just change it over...
