hi everyone! i just have a couple of questions. we just sent in our i485 but we havent gotten our no1 yet. how can we show that he is legally here in order to get a driver license? we had applied for an id card and it expired the same day as the visa expired. if we take our no1 to them will they issue him a drivers license?

In the great state of Georgia, my husband had to have his EAD in order to get a driver's permit. I would advise you to check with the state you live in and find out if this is their requirement as well. From what I understand it varies from state to state. The NOA1 didn't work for us.

hey..
I am in North Carolina, and from my own experience, i couldn't get a driver's licence until i got my green card (or permti to work, ead) ... becasue I could not have my social until i could work and even if I couldve been able to get the driver's licence ahead of time it would've experied when my i-94 expired... so... from what I have heard this happens in almost all states... becasue now they have inmigration, social security and dmv systems all tied together, so you can not get one thing without teh other.... hope you can figure it out and don't have to wait like me. Good luck!

Call the license bureau - this is usually state specific, you generally need a SSN or a denial for a SSN and a specific immigrant class. Best to call them, they can probably give you an answer right away.

As of right now the law where we live in wisconsin you arent required to have a SS# to get a drivers license. All my husband had to do was show was proof of residency. But as a previous poster said it varies from state to state.
