Ok so here is the deal. My fiance passed the interview last week. She will be coming here next week.

How do we get legally married in the state of California? What is involved paperwork wise?

Do I just go to the city hall and get some paperworks to fill out?

Please help. I want to get the paperwork done asap and worry about the rest later.

Thanks again!

I'm too tired to look up how to get married in California, but the usual place to start is with a town/city hall.

Yup! From there, you can get a marriage license and then get married within the time period they require you too. Usually you need at least two witness. You can find a judge or prest to host the wedding and sign the marriage certificate for you. smile.gif

Yeah, I tried looking at their site but no luck...

Thanks! How long does this process take? Can I do it by the end of this year?

So the steps are:

1. Get marriage license from city hall
2. Get judge or prest to sign the marriage certificate

correct?

just google xxxxx county CA marriage, its that simple. Usually a state auditor website pops up. And that will answer all your questions. You have to apply for a marriage. Usually there is a wait. Which means once you get your marriage lisence, you may have to wait a certain number of days before you can actually marry. In WA its 3 days.

In newyork it was really quick and easy. We looked up on google about how to get married in new york and had the licence in our hands the next day. It only took 30 mins to get it and that included the wait in line. In NY you then have to wait 24hours before you can get married.

Just don't go to hget the licence on monday or tuesday!!! I think the priest/judge/rabbi or yourself have 5 days after the marriage to send in the signed marriage licence, so those that take it themselves are usually there on monday or tuesday (if they got married on the weekend) so its a bit crowded. Not sure if this is poss in all states but it is in new york.

Good luck

It is very easy to get married in California. Just go to the nearest County Clerk's office and pay $50 for the license. For another $50 they will perform the legal ceremony--there is no waiting period.

To apply for the marriage license both parties must be present and have identification--so you can't really do any of the paperwork ahead of time.

One of the sites telling that you only need Drivers license and no waiting period. Other states may require a SSN, California doesn't seem to but you can double check with the county office. Good Luck

Slow down. First, make sure you both want this. Give yourself a little time, you do have 90 days.

Then, it's really simple and low tech. Open up the telephone book, you remember that right. Check under the county offices for the Clerk and look specifically for marriage licenses. You can call and schedule an appointment for the marriage. They can do the whole thing. Costs will vary depending upon county, but I was able to get married, obtain certificate and license all within an hour and it cost only $127. My wife was thrilled. She didn't want us spending a lot of money so other people could party and get drunk.

Check it out and relax. Make sure the two of you are really positive about this.

Call me crazy, but shouldn't people have already decided they want to do this before they apply for and receive a fiance visa?

As such, why the caution for people to "slow down" and make sure they are "really positive about this"? The time for caution and reflection is long past once the fiance arrives from his/her home country.

That's only true if your fiance is not mail-order. whistling.gif

Kinda what I was thinking too!

We applied and got our marriage certificate the same day, and could get married the same day if we wanted. No waiting period. All that was needed was ID and my divorce decree. Of course, as someone else posted, the requirements vary from state to state, county by county. Good luck finding out the information. smile.gif

Hey! That was my plan! Just waiting for the visa, and then getting her a plane ticket to Vegas.

Slow down? Been waiting for visa now over 5 months, along with everyone else here. I think its been going slow enough lol.

By the way, after my girl lands in Vegas, we plan to get married 2-3 days later. I know it'll be a long flight for her, and we'll enjoy the first couple days with dinner, get some rest, etc.

The "slow down" thing could hit a nerve with the VJ people here lol.

Hello,

I got married in San Francisco. We applied for the marriage license online on Sunday night and paid for it with our credit card (I just don't remember how much it was). We got an appointment to go to the City Hall on Friday morning (it was the only day my husband could go there that week!), we went there, picked it up and got married a couple of hours later by an officiant (which happened to be our roommate!!!!). I only brought my passport and my husband brought his.

So I'd look online. It will save you a lot of time. Good luck!
