Question to those who have been there and done it!

My Spouse will be entering the US on a K-3 VISA and wants to enroll in an Intesive English Course so that she can validate her Masters Degree here in the US.

Can she register here at the University or Community College with only her K-3 VISA or do we have to wait for the AOS process to be complete?

Can she apply for a US Drivers License with her K-3 VISA and Passport or does she need to wait for the AOS process to be complete?

I appreciate any and all answers and suggestions!

Also, I have read through most of the relative topics and sections and did not see much on these questions!

thanks,
Tony

It all depends on the college, why not call the admissions office of your local college. I work at one and see international students attending all the time, the only thing you may have a problem with is resident/non-resident tuition rates.

As for drivers license all but a few states require, SS card, and a K-3 visa holder cannot get a SS card until they have either Green Card, or EAD in hand.

I cannot imagine why she could not apply to school

Each state's DMV requirements are different. It is best to check with your state or local license bureau.

I'd check with the college she'd wish to attend. I think that most colleges, at the least ask that the person be a permanent resident while they apply.........or otherwise be in the US on a student visa.

I don't think it's as easy as the others who replied on this post presume.............

I think if she is not yet a permanent resident....and entered on a k-3 , she would not be able to apply until then. Otherwise, why not a person just apply from a tourist visa? (even if they had intention to become a resident...they are not that yet....)

I think the college would need something more permanent and concrete than that....

She should be able to apply, but the tuitions would likely be higher at the non-resident student rate. Some community colleges don't do that tho, and will only charge her local tuitions. Call around.

As for the driver's license, check the DMV website for your state. She will probably have to wait until she's got EAD and SSN, which will take a few months.
