I'm curious if any fiances/spouses of Texans have gone through the whole license process in Texas. I called the DMV and they weren't very helpful... What was involved? My fiance doesn't have a license from his home country, so he'll be a first time driver here. Will he have to log a bunch of hours before he can apply for a real license? Any help is greatly appreciated... I don't want my fiance to feel isolated!

In our case it was in Alabama and all immigrants must go to one specific office for the whole state. They have to take the written test and get the learners permit issued and then can take the road test same day if they have a slot open and they are already licensed. Otherwise, you get a learners permit for three months and can go back and take the road test anytime or renew your permit. In Alabama they line up at 5:30 a.m. and the doors open at 8:00 since they only have limited slots available for immigrants. JFYI and hope you have an easier time.

Good luck!

Hi there,

I just took my tx drivers test 2 weeks ago and received my license today in the mail. I was required to show my ssn and Gc then took a very simple computerised test followed by the practical driving test. I have been allowed to drive here for 1 year since entering the U.S. as the U.K has reciprocity with the U.S as it does with many other countries. The link that you were given should help explain everything.

I took my Canadian license to the Social Security office and they gave me a piece of paper saying that I don't have a SS card, at that time I didn't, went to the license office. I paid the money for a license, gave them my old one and got a temp one and my permanent one in the mail later, no test at all. I've got to change the address on it and have to go in and show them my SS card and pay the money and that's it. Not a problem at all.

The Nebraska test is fairly straightfoward. You need to turn up in a specific vehicle. It has to be a beat up old truck with a faded 'Bush Cheney 04' sign on it, peferably with a couple of dead deer strung up in the back. The instructor joins you and for the next part of the test you drive around and around the parking lot at Wal-Mart until the space nearest the main entrance becomes available then you speed up and try and grab the slot. First in, wins the license. The problem is, there are additional rules, firstly during the test no turn signals must be made, it is state law that it is nobody's business but your own where you are going, secondly, during the test you must be driving with one hand holding a half pound cheeseburger and the other hand holding your phone. The license is good until you reach the age of 95 or have been registered blind for more than three months.
