Hello,

My fiancee currently lives in india. She is coming here next month, under the K1 Visa. After she arrives here, i am thinking of giving her the handbook so that she can prepare for the learner's permit. When we go to the DMV, what forms of identification does she need??

HI,

ALL YOUR WIFE WILL NEED TO TAKE WITH HER ARE HER PASSORT WITH HER K1 VISA IN PROOF THAT SHE IS ALLOWED TO LIVE IN TEXAS. YOU NEED TO GET HER SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. SO I WOULD APPLY FOR THAT. IT IS BETTER IF YOU BOTH GET MARRIED FIRST. ELSE YOU WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE PROCESS OF CHANGING NAMES ON THE PERMIT AND SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER.
I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU.

KATH.

I called the Texas DPS in Austin regarding requrements for a Texas DL. I was told that they do not recognize the K1 Visa however if you are married and can produce SS card, marriage license passport with I94 & K1 visa it will be up to the discretion of the local DPS officer in charge as to whether they will allow you to apply for the Texas DL.
