CONGRATS!!! is it going to be a Jr. or do you have names picked out yet?

And to your questions, I for sure want it at a hotel, so out of town guest dont have to worry about transportation they can just stay at the hotel where the wedding is. Most of the hotels I am looking at are on International Dr which is a big time tourist area with lots of things to do.

I am so upset and mad mad.gif My boss just told me today that starting this Monday, I have to go to afternoon shift ranting33va.gif I HATE afternoons. I will never see Tony or any of my family or friends for that matter. I have had enough of this damn job. The lady that is on 2nd shift now is coming back to days because she has "issues" with her babysitter and her kids. That's not my problem! How come I get punished? Life sucks mad.gif

Rhoda:
Have you tried simply telling them no. I find it intrusive and insulting that some jobs think they have this right to uproot you from your fixed schedule. I find simply sticking to a firm but polite " I am sorry , about ______ problems she is facing, however, Im sorry but I cannot change the times I am working on a short notice like this. Are you under some kindah of contract where your employer reserves the right to change you hours whenever they feel like it. Unless you are I dont see how they can fire you, becuase you have other obligations. Of course though you would never want to risk it, not while going through this process.

Unfortunately, the nature of this job is that we have NO say so in what shift we get put on at ALL. mad.gif Since we are salary and not hourly, we are not in the Union so we don't have any rights or protection. I was on day shift for the first 3 years, then afternoons for almost a year, then back to days for 6 months, now back to afternoons this Monday wacko.gif I HATE this job. I'm really trying to look for another job. The problem is finding one that pays even close to what I make here. I just want something with normal hours - 40 hours a week and NO weekends!!

Condolences to Rhonda and Tony. Hugs to you both.

Guys, I have a dilemma and want your input on it. Ok, I told you Lake had an interview Friday. Ok they then sent him for a medical on Monday, which he passed. They called him later that afternoon, and offered him the job. The company HR is the one that interviewed him. Ok...now, he accepted and was to start tomorrow. Ok, now the HR resource gal told me that we would get a call from another gal and we were to sign some papers there, and get all the details and she would see him on Thursday. Ok, happy day, things are good. Ok, the next gal calls us, and sets up an for appointment today, right? Its a staffing agency...
Ok here is where things get weird. I guess the company itself was hiring up until right around this time, and now they have switched over to a staffing agency/temp company, and so...this lady said its just a formality and all we had to bring was 2 forms of I.D and SSN. Well we get there, and they want us to fill out a whole new app as if we had gone thru THEM. That and the pay is reduced by 1.00 an hour. I was definitately getting a baaaaad feeling about this, cuz this is a company where there is heavy lifting and hot metals and industrial stuff and so its no cake walk, they pay fairly well, but it can be very hazardous, so ....anyone know anything about electroplating???? Also, I saw a guy coming out that passed the safety video test and they were making him sign contracts with them, the staffing agency. I have no idea what kind, but that REALLY made me on edge.
Anyhow, they call Lake back in and I guess he has to watch a safety video and then pass a brief test on. She never told us jack about a test or passing it to work. Well, they grade the test, and she calls us both back into a room and proceeds to tell us that he failed the test and you cant retake it for another 3 months.. She said he answered the hard ones correctly which is what everyone misses, so it was obvious he knew his stuff, but on the first question they asked to answer what safety equipment could cover...and had a whole bunch of check marks. Well he thot they wanted ONE answer, and so instead of checking every box, only checked the one he thot most appropriate. But that question was counted wrong for every box not checked, and there were like 9 or more of them. So it made him miss like 8 just on the one question. She even told us it was obvious that he just misunderstood how to answer it. Sorry but they couldnt place him and they wouldnt allow exceptions bucuz then they would have to do that for everybody. (The girl really had an attitude) Lake was hot, he told me never said anything about having to pass, they just threw the video in and she gave him the paper and said "here, fill this out" and left the room. He was plumb smoking all the way home, but in a quiet way.
Well here is where it gets good. This lady called back at 3:45 and told me...well...she had talked it over with the other staff and since it was obvious he had just misunderstood the question, well..they would allow him to watch the video again and retake the test. Could getting there before 5 to do this, be convenient?
Now I was pretty irritated myself bout this whole thing, but asked Lake and he said ok....whatever.
THEN ...I was having SUCH a bad feelin bout the whole damn thing, my sis walked in the door and I was telling her bout the whole situation and she said to HELL with that, and my nephew things I am crazy letting him work at dangerous job (poor Lake, all this while he was getting dressed, for the 4th time today) and so he comes up and I tell him how I feel. I say its up to him, but I DONT have a good feeling and usually staffing agency's mean little to no benefits, or greatly reduced anyway. He says he doesnt wanna die young working with acids and boiling metals either, sooo, I decide to call the staffing agency lady back and tell her forget it, we were pretty irritated with the treatment, and he had another job interview next week anyway.
She said, VERY snidely "WELL, we were just offering that as a COURTESY, we dont normally ever do that, so...we were doing HIM a favor by allowing it"...then "if he changes his mind, let us know"....YEA like I will let THAT happen. Now, I didnt even get the dirt on what kind of contract he would have had to sign, or what benefits he would have gotten. You guys think I did the right thing? I feel so badly for him, like I pulled the rug out from under his feet. He WAS so looking forward to starting work tomorrow.
Altho he had a REAL good interview with the public school system today, and goes for a second next week. It would be custodial but it doesnt mean he has it yet.
I just want allyour input. That stupid lady acted like she was doing an immigrant a favor. I HATE that attitude. The company HR person herself (the one that actually interviewed him) was really sweet, I dont know what happened with getting hired directly by the company, which we THOUGHT was happening, but somehow we got in right at transitional to staffing agencies. I thot staffing places were in charge of finding workers, how come they hired him, THEN sent him there? Crazy!
Anyhow, I am gonna go console my honey, I will be interested in your responses.
Jill

I should KNOW not to try to start a new job, or do ANY paperwork whatsoever during mercury in retrograde. Wait about 3 days before sending anything off, guys, for sure.

UGH!!!!

I am working on taxes. How in the world did those of you file? As having him resident? Non resident? For the ones that got married last year? He only had like 2 months income and it only equalled bout $500 if even that for those two months, so I just have NO idea. I have read the alian tax guide til my head spins..

Oh, good news,... hubby has interview at Lincoln Public Schools on Tuesday, and I THINK its like a placement interview. But...also, the company he was to start at on Thursday ALSO called thursday eve and wondered "what happened" exactly, so they got MY side of the story. HR lady said was totally sympathetic, when I said we felt like we had been "jacked around" and said the staffing agency had NO business doing what they did. They DO use them as payroll AND also the benefits, which holds me back a bit, but the HR lady said they ARE still interested, so if he doesnt get the LPS job, they will keep his paperwork and they will hold the job open next week til we know for sure bout the school job. Real considerate I thought of them. Not sure if they would STILL want him to go thru staffing (kind of temp to hire) or not, but she was a real sweetheart and assured me he wouldnt be working with hot metals or acids or anything like that, so the fact the called to get the scoop really meant a lot to me. To us both. Get this, the staffing agency told HER that he was "no longer interested" in the position. She was going to call them and give them a piece of her mind! So next week, he might have to decide between TWO jobs! lol

Oh and we had small celebration for Leann's passing 28 weeks and 2 days now! Doc said baby SHOULD make it if born now, without TOO many probs! yes.gif

And to the upcoming babies, now....dont HIDE from that ultrasound like my niece's does!!!! I swear every time she puts up the hand, as if to say, "Dont bother me, talk to the hand!" She HATES the ultrasound. Weird huh? Her name will be Kelynn Marie. I think thats the final decision anyhow, its the latest spelling her mom has decided on.... laughing.gif

Good morning.

Michele - Damien liked KFC in JA but will only eat it once in awhile here because he says it's too greasy. His favorite foods so far are Italian (lots of pasta, lasgna, etc), Chinese and soul food. The only American breakfast foods he like are potatoes and turkey bacon sandwiches huh.gif . He'll try anything once so I love to introduce new food to him. We used to eat out - McDonald's, Wendys - lots of fast and junk food. We're eating healthier now.

Good luck on finding fresh seafood and produce. Is there a seafood wharf somewhere around? We have one near my job and the prices are reasonable.

Off to the gym. Have a nice Sunday everyone.

Yeah chinese and KFC for Adrian also...he does eat chicken pizza sometimes...But I am the picky eater, Adrian will try just about anything once...he did like lasagna (sp?) that I made one time.

Yeah I hope to get some ideas, I have found a lot of stuff online and have pictures saved of things i like...oh yeah that reminds me I should take my camera to the bridal show.
Mom and I had a little dispute last night she wants me to have what she calls a "traditional" wedding cake flavor...I wanted like a pineapple or mago flavored cake and she says no it has to be vanilla flavor (boring) it will look like a "traditional" wedding cake but i wanted some fun flavor in it.
AnywayI am sure there will be more disagreements along the way...she wants everything "traditional" but last night I asked her "What is traditional to you might not be traditional for others"

Roy was VERY picky when he got here. But I am forcing him to at least try different things. So far, so good. Most everything he has tried he has liked -- off the top of my head I can't think of anything that he didn't like. He really likes Chinese -- that's mostly what we end up getting if we go "out."

Regarding the fish issue -- it was a problem for us in the beginning. Now, we are buying frozen fish and he has gotten used to it. I NEVER eat fish and found myself cooking it for my dinner last night. He was eating the chicken soup that I made. I think he really LOVES the stocked freezer!!

It's just gonna be hit & miss for a while.....

Jill - lots of great news! It's nice that Lake will have a choice about his job... and that he won't be working around anything dangerous if he chooses the first. And congrats to Leann, that must be such a relief for all of you!! good.gif

So true yes.gif

Mom and I had a little dispute last night she wants me to have what she calls a "traditional" wedding cake flavor...I wanted like a pineapple or mago flavored cake and she says no it has to be vanilla flavor (boring) it will look like a "traditional" wedding cake but i wanted some fun flavor in it.

Joanna -- Push for what you want. It is your wedding. I think people like different things.....some weddings get so boring because they are all alike.....

Yea I know what you mean, I do not want a boring white wedding, like I said before I want a bunch of color!! I think mom is ok with the color choice...but we do have to compomise...mom and dad are paying for it whistling.gif

Joanna why don't you have two smaller cakes made instead of one; one that's more traditional and the one that you want?

Good luck on finding fresh seafood and produce. Is there a seafood wharf somewhere around? We have one near my job and the prices are reasonable.

There are seafood markets around-no wharf that I'm aware of. The kind of fish that he likes to eat are not the kind you can get around here or not the same name anyway. I was amused that some of animals and birds that are the same ones that we have here are called different names in Jamaica. I saw some birds in JA that I would call 'crows' and my friend told me the name they called them in JA; something similar to the sound the birds make. So maybe we do have the same kind of fish but they may call it a different name there.
Joanna's suggestion to 'seal and freeze' what you find on sale is good. Fish in supermarkets here can be very expensive. I don't like fish or cook either for that matter ohmy.gif. He does like to cook though.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't know how he will adjust to the cooking here, especially my mom's. She does that old fashioned southern style soul food cooking especially on Sundays.

Is there a Caribbean grocery store near you? Damien buy his red snapper and king fish from the Caribbean grocery store. The first time he asked for red snapper, we went to the wharf and he didn't see anything he liked. That was my biggest fear before his arrival - what if Damien didn't like American food. I can't cook Jamaican food (or any kind really) but everything worked out. Sometimes I wonder if he eat my cooking because he's too lazy (or spoiled) to cook his own unsure.gif

Yes, there are plenty of Caribbean grocery stores near me. CT(Hartford area) supposedly has the 3rd largest Jamaican population in the US, and we have a very large Puerto Rican population too. Also there is a mix of a lot of other Caribbean people, so I don't know why I'm so worried. I'm sure he won't starve. King fish seems to be his favorite so I'm sure the markets here must carry what he wants.

Good evening VJ family,

Good new! Anthony got his driver's license. He has been driving everywhere since he got it. His license expires on April 11, 2006. He will need an EAD or green card to get a license for a longer period. I don't see why they wouldn't give him the amount of time his NOA for the AOS stated the processing time for the application (180 days). That makes more sense but then I don't make the laws.

Congratulations to Anthony! I know he must be thrilled.
I have to say it though, to give him a license that expires in a few weeks does not make any sense to me
no0pb.gif. I agree with your reasoning and timing Ann.
But still I am happy for him and I know it must be a relief for you too.
I have a long commute to work and don't like driving much more than I have to. Chauffeuring is not my idea of fun.

Mine either. Before I retired, I had an hour commute each way. Now that I am home, my sister has severe rhuematoid arthritis and sometimes is in too much pain to drive to her numerous doctors' app. so I have to drive her and my mother doesn't drive, so everywhere she goes I'm the driver, so the idea of adding a third person to drive around is not very appealing, but those are the breaks, you know I won't be complaining, except to you guys no0pb.gif .
