Full Version: proof of being single?

Hello! I'm traveling to Tanzania in January to be with my fiance for a few months. We've been trying to figure out where it would be best to get married / what type of visa would be best for us. In the case that we decide to file for a IR-1/CR-1, we'd have to get married in Tanzania. How do I obtain proof that I am single and legally able to get married?

Also, was the IR-1/CR-1 process hellishly long for those who have gone through it? It's tempting because it's so much cheaper than the K-1 process, but I don't really want to be away from my fiance any longer than I have to.

Thanks!

The CR1 process is a long process but worth it!!, and also its not really any cheaper than the K1 process, all the same fee's have to be payed for both!!....just at different times, with the CR1 you will pay the fee's at NVC that you would pay anyway for AOS with a K1!!

as proving your single, well all i can say is you cant unless you have divorce papers??.....other than that its all based on "your word"!!

hi,
If you were divorced then your divorce papers will prove that, also your tax return showing you are claiming single would be proof.

The upfront cost of the I-129F are much lower than CR1 but you do have to take into account the AOS fees later. If you decide to get married while you are there, you have to keep in mind that you will be leaving without him while the paperwork is processing, just like with the I-129F and it does take longer. Aside from previous divorce proof, there is nothing to prove that you are single aside from the "Fiance letter of intent".

Kitkat....Tax returns are also proof as well as an afidavit from the embassy. The "fiance letter of intent" doesnt prove anything as its not a legal paper.

Good point - but in no way a requirement for the I-129F - only a "Fiance letter of intent" indicating that you you are free to marry is required unless you are divorced.

See the Embassy/Consulate's American Citizens Services section to find out about getting an affidavit. Normally, if it is a reuirement for getting married locally, they will have one that you can sign and have notarized (for a fee/varies).
That's what we had to get. You can try to get something from your State Secretary of State's office, but they're not always easily available in the US.

I had to get a "letter of no marriage record" from my local Vital Records office. It just basically states that no marriages exist on file in my state.

Check here for your local office: http://www.vitalrec.com/

Good Luck!
