Anyone use web cam with skype when they are chatting with Fiance'? I cant see to find
a web cam option. Maybe I am doing something wrong.
kitkat1
When I hooked up my webcam, Skype automatically noticed it was there. Maybe you need to reinstall your webcam software.

You need to be in voice chat for the cam to work.
No option for using a cam with just text chat that I have found.

Do you have the latest version of Skype?
Have you installed the most recent drivers for your webcam?
Have you selected your video device in Skype under Tools > Options > Vid?
Have you tried the Skype Help menus? http://support.skype.com/index.php

(kind of obvious that you cannot use a webcam when you are simply texting, isn't it?) whistling.gif

Is skype a free service? there are no fees to download or use? I always talk to my fiance via a headset and webcam through msn messenger video conversation, but sometimes it takes forever to connect, I was wondering if skype was better or pretty much the same?

Skype is a free service and the video and voice is great. I prefer it over any of the chat services. Go to www.skype.com and download it. You will be glad you did. It also keeps a record of your chats for you.

It does keep a history of your chats. But have you tried to print it???

When I attempt it opens my browser and only shows my text messages.
To show the amount of time we have chatted voice I had to do screen shots of each page of history.
If you have a better way of printing the chat history please let me know.

Thanks,
Michele

Do you have the latest version? I just tried looking at the history of my skype chat log and it brings up a webpage with both the party I am chatting with and myself. Shows everything--both time and date stamped. It's actually very nice.

Hey...

I have been having the same problem with my wife's computer in Colombia. She has the same brand computer as me and same camera as me - I brought them to her - but her computer will NOT read a webcam and yet mine will! We have tried EVERYTHING!!!!!!

I will tell you that MSN Messenger Video Conversation - Version 7.5 and NOT the new Version 8 - is better than Skype, in my opinion.

What is your operating system? I am not sure if it is still the case, but Skype videoconferencing used to be available only under Windows XP.

I'd use MSN or AOL or Yahoo messenger..

I've been using Skype with a webcam for about a year with no trouble. They have great, free online help to solve these types of glitches - can't imagine it would be a big deal or difficult to resolve.

We've used skype and msn a lot. But a few months ago we found a new and great program!
It's called CAMFROG. It's a video chat program, with lots of chat rooms... But we only use the private chat thing. You can chat with your SO and use webcam/voice as well. The video quality is the best I've seen so far. WAY better than msn and skype, imo. The video window is smaller than the other programs, but the quality is so good that it makes up for it. Oh, it's also free.

My SO and I use webcams, unfortunately she is on dial-up (in India high-speed connection is too expensive where she lives) and I'm on high-speed. The connection using MSN and Yahoo are very bad for both video and chat.. how does this compare to using SKYPE? would the quality suck if I'm on broadband and she on dial-up?
TracyTN
My fiance was forced back on dial up for a few months over the summer. We could do Skype for voice but it would drag to a halt if we tried to run the cams, too.

The voice quality was ok - he could hear me perfectly but there were times when his voice would REALLY drag (obviously due to the dial up). It was doable - you'd just have to try it and see if you're ok with it.
