Mrs Alford
Hey Folks... I'm feeling a little homesick today. It hasn't even been 2 weeks yet and I'm bored! Missing my job, my family & friends so much. BUT... I get to finally live with my LOVE so I'll get used to it.

It'll be 2 weeks tomorrow since my arrival here.... and am wondering if I should go ahead and apply for my SSN. I have done some research on here and discovered that it is possible to do so without the EAD stamp/documentation because my K1 visa and I-94 doc. is enough to suffice. I'm so confused! Does this mean that once I have my SSN I can start applying for jobs? Even before I'm married and applied for AOS? helpsmilie.gif

Go ahead an apply for your SSN. You only need to wait 2 weeks to ensure that you are in the system. I applied after 2 weeks and got my card less than 2 weeks later. Once you are married you can apply to have a new card issued in your married name. I just did that today.

Good luck

Do go ahead and apply for your SSN now, you will have to change your name on it after you are married (assuming you are female and taking hubsters name) but if you wait and your K-1 expires or is close to it then you can't apply until you have your EAD via AOS.

Unfortunately you can't work without the EAD but the SSN is necessary for so many other things ..... bank accounts, Driving Licence, jealth insurance, and tax returns if your filing married joint (yes I know you can apply for ITIN but no point if you CAN get the SSN) to name but a few.

the homesickness/boredom does get better slowly enjoy the "vacation".
Waiting in Vancouver
Yup go ahead and get your SSN Card ... I applied for mine after I was in the US for 10 days although most people will tell you to wait till 14 days ...

Like others have said, unfortunately you can not work until you receive either your EAD or GC ... I would suggest that you start gathering all of the info you need for AOS and get a good understanding of the procees so once your married and have some time (not sure if your going on a honeymoon) you can finish the package and get it mailed off to Chicago ... Visit the AOS forum on VJ if you need any help with the forms and what not ...

The sooner you get the package sent the sooner you will be working ... We took about 4 weeks from when I entered the US before we sent off the papers due to the wedding and honeymoon and what not ... I didn't sit down a learn about the process until after our honeymoon and I wish I had been more prepared and got the papers out sooner ...

I am going stir crazy now as it has been over 90 days since I last worked in Canada and I am really itching to start working ... I already have a job lined up so atleast I have the part already done and now myself and my future employer are waiting for my EAD or GC whichever comes first ...

Good luck
