Mrs. Forgetful
Middle names. We here in America are used to people with middle names. When I met my husband and found out that he didn't have a middle name, I thought it was a little odd. I was dreaming about this last night and thought I would ask.
melly
My fiance has a middle name.
I was really confused at first about how they name kids in Egypt but I guess the system works for them. I'm still not quite sure how they manage to make a family tree. How do you know who's related to who when all the last names are different??? blink.gif

He has several middle names but they are not his... his name goes... his name, his dad's name, his grandad's name, his great grandad's name, etc and then his tribe name wacko.gif

Which brings up another thing americans marrying ME/NA peeps should talk about before marriage, or at least before having children. Will the kidss names follow the naming conventions of the ME/NA country (often as VP mentioned, their name, father's name, grandfather's name, etc)?

Curious, do they consider this a middle name, or is this a continuation of the family name? My husband has two last names and has been prompted to put one as a middle name on forms by people, but they are really his last name.

Well I consider them middle names because they're in the middle between his name and his tribe name and when we filled out forms we had to put them as middle names... not all of them though... just how he had it on his passport THANK GOD!

My husband doesn't have a middle name but our son will. Middle names started in the United States as a convention of the church - so that when you were Christened you were given a "Christian" name but it has evolved into a tradition in the US. I have friends who had like 4 names because they were given an extra Christian name at their Christening.
doodlebug
by the time i say all of his names it's almost time to log off!!!!

Wadi has no middle name. I think I prefer it that way although we haven't had this discussion as it will pertain to our kids....
Mrs. Forgetful
Adil says no to middle names, but I think I will get to choose that one. I mean, the woman is the one who really gets to name the child right? If not, we should since we carried it in our belly for 9 months!

Yousuf has two boy names picked out and I have two.... I also have two girl names and I think he has two too so we're just gonna have to alternate naming them.... unless I'm gonna have 8 more kids wacko.gif
Mrs. Forgetful
well ten kids isn't that bad! laughing.gif

Is that typical of Moroccans..to not have middle names?

My husband has..his name, his dad's name, his grandfather's name, his great grand's name, his great-great grand's name and his family name.

My kids have the same. My oldest son's name is...Zayd Sadek Abdo Ali Mohamed *******.

I was raised Catholic so if I were still Catholic I'd be..Kara Ann Marie Christine *******. Ann and Marie are two separate names. That would be my first, middle, baptismal, confirmand, and last name.

Hahaha..yeah you would THINK. My ex and I both agreed on our son's names but I wasn't allowed to decide on my own. If so my younger son would be named, Sami. I do like his name though and it's more fitting for him.

This just made me realize the voting could be skewed because of this though because I consider it a middle name while you may not so we're voting two different answers for the same thing? unsure.gif

My husband has this also. It's the tradition in many Arab societies. He gets confused by Western-style naming traditions, especially middle names "out of nowhere" -- he says "How will they know who is the family ?" laughing.gif
cbd2cai
My husband uses his father's name as his middle name and his grandfather's name as his last name as does his brother. That is how it is legally stated on all our papers and his passport. I think they had to limit the number of names too since the papers can only hold so many characters.

Together4ever
We discussed this situation also regarding whether or not I change my name and to which one (ha ha). Moh isn't terribly conventional so we chose an agreed upon "last name" that we will both use in this country (the same one that is considered his "last name" in his country).
MHandMB
Hmm, Amed just has his first name, and his family name. No middle name, no grandfather, father, mother's maiden names, etc.

One thing I did notice that was odd is that ever since his mother died a few years ago, his sister and his brothers have named their newborn daughters after his mother, Kheira. So, he has 7 brothers and one sister, and I think there are five little Kheiras running around now. They all have the same last name, except for his sister's daughter. Is that typical of the culture, I wonder? I had never heard of that before.

Does your SO have a middle name?

Not sure [ 0 ] [0.00%]

Does your SO have more than one middle name?
Yes [ 4 ] [19.05%]
No [ 6 ] [28.57%]

One person voted No in the second option instead of SO doesn't have a middle name. I almost did the same until I read through all the answer choices...

My husband has that too, but I didn't think that was included, so I didn't for the poll.

I don't know what you and your husband has decided about who names the children, but my husband told me it is normal that the fathers mother names the children. IIIIFFFFFF my husband finally gets the visa, and IIIFFFFFF I can get pregnant, she will name him/her/them. We do have some preferences, so my husband said he would gently guide her towards these names! laughing.gif

Kara- My middle name is also Ann Marie. But my real name was supposed to be First: Janine Ann; Middle: Marie. But my mom said that at the hospital or something, they made a mistake and made Ann Marie my full middle name.

Morocco4ever- My husband and I already have the first names picked out, and his mother agrees. The only thing is, is that his sister wants to name their first girl the same as we do. So now it's a race to see who has the first baby girl.

We are using a middle name for our baby -- something from my family. I like the flow of a having a middle name. The first name will be Moroccan. Or the first name will be from my family and the middle name Moroccan -- I am due in 2 weeks and we still haven't made up our minds!

I really don't know if my husband's names are considered middle names
he just has his name and his father's and his grandfather's name plus the family name.
so i would think it was one whole name because it identifies his lineage.
