I bought my kids a "My First Words" Arabic dictionary, among other things, for Eid and I was looking through it with them tonight and I've come across something that's confusing me a little....
It has a picture of a mosque with جامِع written under it. That's jaami'a? What dialect is this? I'm used to masjid مسجد and have never heard this other word. Is it slang?

I don't think its tied to a cetain dialect, but I say jaami'a and so do most Jordanians. I think Lebanese and Palistinians say it too.

yeah i think ur right .. I am pretty sure that's what Noor calls it too..jaami'a.... I'll have to ask him when he gets home from work.... he can fluently speak in all the different dialects, he amazes me...he's always saying..oh, this is from egypt, this is from syria, etc, etc, etc.... I guess it's no different than us being able to distinguish the Washington lingo compared to Missouri lingo.......
