i was in baltimore for my info pass appointment and i was shocked just how americans treat people from outside the country ,like they were animals ,right down to the black guy at the front desk ,who asked to look at i.d`s ,the moment he knew i wasn`t carrying an american i.d ,he tried to assert his authority ,making me hold up my passport ,and open it for him ,even though he hardly glanced at it ,being that he was sitting so far away from the desk ,looking all comfortable and aloof.
He only lean alittle to see my husband`s i.d ,but for real you could have flashed a fake i.d and he wouldn`t know, cause he wasn`t really doing his job ,just acting the part.
The INS officer was the same too.
My husband wrote down the address and she was like yeah thats right thats good ,american address ,but on my I-130 i put down my country`s add and she got on my case.
i thought i was suppose to list my home address ,i didn`t know it was for my current residence .

What *are* you on about?

Don't lump my family and I in with "Americans" if you can only base your comments on one experience.

I knew one guy from Singapore before; he was really nice. I guess I will have to change my opinion of your countrymen now/
jasman0717
Maybe the guy just doesn't like his job but the pay and benefits are good so he stays on. It does seem a bit naive to judge all Americans by one man's actions.
desert_fox
Seems like you are always a victim.

That's real mature... attacking someone for doing one thing, and then doing the exact same thing to prove some sort of point??? Racism at it's finest, I suppose. For the record, it's no secret that a lot of (and no, NOT ALL, meauxna) Americans show hostility towards people who are NOT American. It's around people all day... and if you are fortunate to have not seen it happen around you, then I'd suggest not moving from where you are. It's a harsh world out there.

Just the other night, a Filipina girl was sitting at the same table as me at a nice restaurant (we were all celebrating a friend's birthday) and she started insulting Europeans and anything "South of the Border" saying how awful and bad they were... and I sat there biting my tongue.. and I was furious.. my parents were both born in Europe and then immigrated to Canada.. and here she is insulting my family (she didn't know she was, but that is most certainly not the point). I guess what I'm trying to say is that the OP was upset and venting that frustration. My husband is an American and got treated like crap at the Baltimore office too... and it's not one experience. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if you don't like it, then dismiss it and walk away.

i was making a point about baltimore in general ,not to harshly indicate racism, but open your eyes its out there!
And to condemn my entire country men aren`t you just as racist (meauxna ).
it was my own experience that i felt .i WOULD NEVER SAY based on one incident THAT I THink the whole nation is bad , you have to be fair ,perharps my phrasing was wrong but still that incident did happen ,but i have moved on from it ......thank you to all for your positive input to the topic.

It often seems that the ones that bleat most about racism are from societies/races who are the most intolerant themselves.

Mote and planks comes to mind for those religously inclined.

well he certainly treated immigrants differently ,if he was one himself that was sad.

If you go looking for racism then you will find it.... I am here in america and I have encountered lots of things that could be taken as rasist... but I think it is more to do with ignorance of other nations rather than true racism...

Americans are brought up to belive that all things American are good and that everyone else whats to be just like them.... they call it national price....

If you allow yourself to be bothered by what you think is racism directed at you then you will be a victim all your life.... no if someone is calling you a white bit** and you should go home then yes they are being rasist... do you go shout and claim racial abuse thats up to you.... me I just think how ignorant they are and get on with my life...

Right, so my point is that it was the *individual* and not his nationality, correct?

Very well put. I agree with you. I dismiss it, and walk away and get on with my life. Ignorance is all around.

That's real mature... attacking someone for doing one thing, and then doing the exact same thing to prove some sort of point???

While it's most unfortunate that my pinkie slipped yesterday so that my "?" came out as "/" it's more unfortunate that you couldn't/wouldn't see the intended irony in my reply. I realize also that you don't online-know me and therefore know that I am -not- doing the same thing.

Posts like these that spew a baseless attack bug me. So what?

I realize that you missed my point because I was using sarcasm, or as Cherry puts it 'sarkiness' (my family says 'snarky').

To be very clear: I do not judge every Singapore person on what you said. I added that as an example of how unfair it was of you to say that "Americans" are one way because of your perception of your encounter with one man.
Just as I would not judge a nation on the comments of one person, I would like for my nation to not be judged by the behavior (or your perception of the behavior) of one person.

For the record now and forever, I still like Singapore people and I look forward to visiting your very tidy land one day to scuba dive in your beautiful seas. Or nearby.

Try the Charlotte office. They are the most helpful people I have met. When I had my Green Card interview they were so helpful, the woman treated us like family. I am on my conditional green card until next year and have already prepared myself for the next round of process and application to become a US citizen.

I don't sense racism here, just a guy at the front desk who probably doesn't like his job and an INS officer who is having a bad day. Don't take it personal. Maybe you can change how you interpret this whole situation, then perhaps you'd realize that it wasn't about you.
