Veiled Princess
I swear if it wasn't physically impossible I would swear I was pregnant mad.gif
I've been craving a dish my husband fed me in Egypt for almost a year now and I'm going to go insane if I can't make it.
Anywho.... I need date syrup to make it and I don't have a ME/NA store here in my lil town and I've looked online BUT the only place I can find it is in the UK and they want to charge me like $40 to ship a $10 case here. That's unreal! mad.gif

I know some of you girls live near those stores and I am BEGGING someone to buy me some date syrup and mail it to me... I'll pay all the charges... either I'll wire you the money or send a check or however you want! helpsmilie.gif Surely it won't cost $40 bucks to mail it within the US right??? unsure.gif
morocco4ever
I will be going this weekend to the Arabic store, I can look and see if they have it. The store is kind of small.
noura
I'll look too this weekend, won't be getting there before then... let us know if you get some before the weekend!
moody
If I go to Dearborn this weekend I'll check for you inshallah.

What is this dish you're talking about?
charles!

homesick_american
If nobody can get their hands on it I can look for it here in the UK.
Veiled Princess
WOW I didn't expect so many replies so quickly ohmy.gif You ladies rawk!

Moody, the dish is aseeda rubb and when he first made it I actually laughed and said I wasn't eating it. I watched him cook it and I was like.... OK habibi when are ya gonna bake the bread???? He said no we're gonna eat it like this... I was like blink.gif ya habibi it's dough!!!! wacko.gif Anyway he talked me into it and OMG I LOVE it! I can make it I just need the date syrup and it's taking an act of Congress to find it.

Someone PM'd me and I'll get you my contact details and SHUKRAN to everyone who offered to help!!!!!

moody
is it made with bulgur wheat?
Veiled Princess

is it made with bulgur wheat?

He just made it with flour. I have noticed there is a variation on how to make aseeda depending on where you are in the world... in the gulf, for instance, I read that they add a lot of stuff in it before putting the sauce on but Libyan style is just basically a dough formed into a mound with a hole in the top to hold the sauce and you just eat it with your fingers.... the sauce is the date syrup mixed (deluted really) with butter and it's just sooooooooooooo good....
Now is not a good time to be thinking about this laughing.gif

Sudan style
UAE style

38. Aseeda
Ingredients:
2 cups of flour
3 cup water
Honey
Butter
Oil
Salt

Water, salt to be in frying pan & heat it up. Add 1 spoon of oil. Add flour while stir the mixture quickly with wooden spoon. Remove the mix and keep stirabout in a large bowl until it soften. (Become aseeda) Add some of the boiled water to the aseeda and heat it for 10 min. Again beat the mixture for it to be soften and for getting a thick mixture. Pour some hot butter or honey.
Libyan style

If anyone has any other variations on how to make this dish I'd be open to trying them all as well biggrin.gif

It's almost like the aseeda from Yemen only Yemenis don't eat theirs as a dessert. Yemeni aseeda is made with bulgur wheat that boiled then self rising flour or Jiffy baking mix is added. It's served with soup made with either chicken or lamb (basically just the broth is used), helba, and zhug. I miss that soooo much! YUMMY!!

Date syrup?
Do you have a natural foods or health foods store nearby? You might find it there.
moody
Are you anywhere near Dearborn? They have really good mahshi Cedarland and other restaurants in the area. It doesn't quite compare to the mahshi my MIL makes but it's acceptable and I'm sure far tastier than anything bought at Walmart.

Salwa, you should come on down. Maashy is the one Egyptian dish I mastered. I can't find the grape leaves (which is my favorite) but I do ok with the cabbage. Tastes exactly like Moh's mother's and my kids love it.

They sell grapeleaves in jars in most arabic stores. Ihave even seen them in Safeway lately by the olives. They don't taste as good as fresh, but they are quite good.
