Not required, but if you want to wait 10 to 14 days before applying not a going to greatly affect things.
Waiting in Vancouver
I waited 10 days after entering the US and I got my SSN card about 8 days after I applied ...

After Claudeth had been here for two weeks we applied and it took about another two weeks to get the card. Once we were married we applied for an EAD card and when the EAD card arrived we went back to social security and applied for her name change. They told us they would need acknowledgement from USCIS and that is what the EAD did for us. It took us another 6 weeks to get her new card with her married name.

When we went back to do the name change they told us that the marriage certificate wasn't good enough, we would need something to acknowledge the marriage from the USCIS. We applied for EAD so when it arrived we went back and they submitted the paperwork to change her name. About 6 weeks later the card came. Not sure why we applied for the EAD, Claudeth isn't too fond of working biggrin.gif

Read somewhere It takes a bit of time to get her entry data entered into system.
Call SSA they said 3 weeks.

Thanks you all for your input. I will post mine as it occurs.

If you called the SSA 800# I would bet my life on they told you the amount of time to receive your SSN card through the Enumeration At Entry process, which is to allow three weeks after you arrive.

10 to 14 days is plenty, since you only have 76 days as a K-1 to be assigned an SSN before needing an EAD card, so the longer you wait the more you cut into those 76 days.

I went to the SS office 17 days after entry and was told that I wasn't in the system yet. I am going to try again in a few days...

If you don't go tomorrow, you will need to wait until Tuesday, because Monday is a federal holiday.

I only showed them my green card when I applied my SSN.

YEs, the SSA officer told us that it will be good to apply after 10-15 days after your POE date. (to ensure your name in the DB)

We applied around 14 days after POE date and received the card 5 days later.

IT was a breeze..

My husband did his about a week after entering (although it was the Tuesday after a holiday and the wait in the office was a bit long.) He got his SS card about a week later, we were amazed.
