Waiting in Vancouver
Just got the good news that my Canadian EI claim was finally accepted ... I think it has been about 8 weeks since I sent in the paperwork and 10 weeks since my last day at work ...

I was surprised when I was outside doing some yard work my cell rang at it was Canadian EI wanting to confirm a few things like when we got married and when I applied for my work authorization ect ...

She also explained that there is 6 weeks that I will not get my claim for because of the 3 weeks serverence pay and one week holiday pay that I received from my employer and that there is a normal 2 weeks that EI will wait before a claim starts ...

So basically she said that I get benefits from the first week of September through till my K-1 Visa expires in December ... and that I am to send them a copy of my EAD or greencard when I receive it so that I can get benefits past December 9 (which is the day my K-1 Visa expires) ...

I have a second interview this Friday with a company and it sounds like it is pretty much a done deal ... So basically I won't need benefits much after the date I recieve my EAD or AOS as this new potential employer already knows my situation and I would be starting pretty much right after I get my documents (within a week or 2) ...

Nope I don't have my EAD approved yet ... The lady that I talked to at EI understands that the K-1 Visa allows us to work in the US ... They probably don't know that it is almost impossible for a company to hire us because we don't have proof that we are allowed to work even though we are allowed to ...

I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding with Canadian EI in regards to the K-1 visa ...

Have you started your claim yet ?? if so I would get it revisited as I think the person you talked to was misinformed ... I have the 1-800 number for the out of country claim centre if you need it ...

Ya I was at my company back in Canada for 16 + years ... This is actually the first time in my life that I have applied for EI ... I figure all of those years paying into it I should get something out of it smile.gif

Buttons, you're a K3. K3s need an EAD/GC for EI benefits. K1s don't need to submit that until the Visa expires.
