Has anyone on here asked for a temporary (90 day) work visa when they've entered on their K-1? I'm just curious because my fiance is willing to do anything as work (even if it is just temporary) to make some money when he first gets here. I know it's only good for 90 days, but I'm wondering how we go about getting it. I know I say this all of the time, but thank you everyone! We would be lost without this site!

Yes, it does seem that JFK is the only port of entry that still gives the EAD stamp. That's what we're trying for when my fiance comes here, so he's flying into JFK first and then on to California.

Remember that even if he gets a temp EAD at JFK, he won't be able to work legally until he has received his Social Security Number.

It's also worth remembering that if he is lucky enough to find a job before the temp EAD expires, he will more than likely have to quit that job when that runs out and won't be re-employable until his actual EAD is issued alongside his AOS application.

... and you have to wait 2 weeks after entry to file for an SSN so that you're 'in the system'. The temp EAD is only good for 90 days.

Usually not worth it for most people...

I got a temp EAD at JFK last week - no problem at all.

I read only yesterday of a VJer getting a social security card only 8 days after entering the country so go for it!!

If you do you legal paperwork for the marriage soon after entering the country and then send of all the other AOS paperwork there is a chance your work permit comes through before the temp EAD expires....

This is my plan of action anyways....

True but I didn't trust it! Plus my man will be here Nov (real wedding) - Feb (our 'fake' wedding) so I figured getting work at Xmas will be hard....

Hee hee - so that is how you differentiate - 'real' and 'fake' marriage. I'm calling it 'doing the paper work' vs the wedding.

Applied for the social security # today and it will be delieved in 14 days. Cannot get the wedding license until we have the SS #... so our idea of doing the 'paperwork' this weekend went down the drain.... ;-)

They won't allow you to get married without a social security card??? Our county only requires a valid identification, to verify age and identity.

It varies state to state!

I should rephrase that - the legal wedding & the fancy wedding(where I can wear my FABULOUS dress!). biggrin.gif

I certainly called them up in NC and they said either I had to have a SS # or sign an affidaviat to say I was not eligible for a SS. She also stated that as I was eligible for a SS# I could not go down the second route. An unexpected tur of events but at least we caught this in time to sort it out before the wedding..... :-)
