Okay so I've been curious about this. Since beneficiaries coming from Canada have the option of taking all their worldly posessions across the border with them, I'm curious to know how you moved/are planning to move.

I was originally planning to take a Uhaul untel I read the horror stories about the company, AND Uhaul jacked up their prices astronomically. So instead I found a place called ABS U-Pack. You take all your stuff to one of their commercial trailers and pack it in, provide them with the appropriate documents, and send them on their merry way while you walk on to a plane. A week later, you go pick up all your stuff. The way they are able to make it so cheap is after your stuff is packed behind a bulkhead in the truck, they load the rest of it up with commercial goods that are being shipped to a nearby location.

All of this, including the one-way flight into Denver, comes in at a tidy $1500. Uhaul was going to charge me 1498.00 PLUS paying for the gas on the damn truck. As an aside the only reason I am doing this is because when my mom moved away she left me a bunch of really nice furniture that would cost well over $4000 to replace.

So is this a good deal? Yes? No? Any suggestions? Tips? Recommended companies? tongue.gif

No, this sounds like a reasonable deal.

You may get a slightly cheaper deal on a 30-day inflexible-return flight than on a one-way though.

i used u-pack for our move from calgary to california a month ago, and was very impressed with the speed and service. they kept in constant contact with us (you can even track your shipment online) and it took less than 5 days for us to get our stuff, and that's including over a weekend!

i'd really say you can't go wrong with it. of course, you have to load and unload the trailer yourself, but it's not a big deal, really. we hired movers through emove.com to help us load/uload (i'd recommend it for the loading at least, to minimize things getting damaged/broken - we had a full 28' truck, and not one thing was damaged!), or get friends/family to help. but i'd definitely recommend upack over uhaul. i wouldn't even consider uhaul, actually. we saved $4000 by using upack over a full-service mover, and our stuff arrived much faster than the full-service movers had quoted us.

email me if you want details - i'm just trying to keep this post as short as possible. smile.gif

good luck!
