Speaking only from personal experience.

1. Makati City (Metro Manila)- if you like the big city it's a great place to stay (best western averages $50 a night and is 17 stories high I believe. There is a mall nearby that is huge)

2. Manila - parts are ok, we enjoyed Rizal Park, the Mall of Asia rivals any mall in the world with regulation ice rink, imax theaters, and I even spotted a dell computer store in there.

3. Cebu City - ok, rough traffic problem there, downright brutal to get around. I would like to see more but I'm usually exhausted from stop and go travel.

4. Sogod Calumboyan - rural area Northern Cebu Province is relaxed, nice break from city. My wife and I enjoy morning walks and swims in the ocean, a great way to start the day.

5. Dipolog City - Zamboanga del Norte - beautiful countryside, mountainous area, great hiking, patrols are run sometimes between cities as rebels and mountain clans clash, not to mention the Philippine army runs patrols to hunt down terrorist camps.

On my list to do: Chocolate Hills...I hear is it beautiful.

I would edit but would take some time here. "Great to hear". I really liked the Marco Polo in Davao City. Incredible breakfast buffet. But over priced on a limited budget. I would sure like to find places in the Philippines that are the equivalant of motel 6, charging 20$ to 40$ a night.

One footnote about getting around in Manila or Cebu.

1. Make sure you negotiate your fare when getting into the taxi or at least make sure they are metered. If not you will pay too much

2. There is a hotel in Cebu, I will get the exact name later but we paid $15 per night and it was clean and offered room service, about 10 minutes from SM Mega Mall in Cebu. Most taxi drivers know of 2 local motels, one is sleezy and real close to SM Mega mall the other one is closer to Mandaui city (spelling).

Thanks for the information. Any information about inexpensive good hotels in the Philippines is welcome news to me.

Motel - Cebu City, safe, security guards, clean, room service, cheap - Prince Court - most taxi drivers know where it is. Last time I stayed there back in June my wife remembers it being 700p night.

That is what I like to see. Every place I ended up staying cost me like 7000 pesos a night.
