I didn't file my taxes yet for 04 or 05. I plan on doing it shortly but haven't yet. I know you need this for the I-134. Do they check this kind of stuff at the service center level? do they deny benefits for not filing? I was just wondering. I guess I better file and get it over with. Need it for the rest of the journey.

yep, get them filed Andy

It has no effect on the approval of the petition at service center.

You should get them prepared and filed. It makes no sense to have something else hanging over your head with all the you are going to be doing. This way you can proceed with a clear conscience. It is not likely that the State Department checks with the IRS if you have filed your taxes, but what if they do? Just get it done.
Also, if you are self employed, you will need to provide copies of bank statements along with the tax returns for the past two years.
