Five weeks ago they were preparing to issue my fiance's K1 visa but he received what we presume was a name hit. The consulate called and asked him to come in and give his full set of prints. He did. The man taking his prints told him it was just standard processing and for him not to be worried about it and they should be finished in 4 to 6 weeks.

I've searched VJ but have not been able to find concrete details about what exactly happens after the prints are taken. How are they processed? Who does it? And why does it take so darn long? His prints were scanned digitally and appeared one by one next to his picture on the computer screen.

If anyone has a link to an explanation of just what this processing entails or has information I would sure appreciate it if you could share.

Thanks.

I'm with ya. 6 weeks since digital prints taken. Officer said 2 to 3 months to process (in Mexico). I guess each consulate is different. Mexican consulate says they process internally.
You would think it would take 24 hrs. This really sucks especially b/c we are suffering for other peoples crimes. I haven't seen any other posts besides ours of other people having false hit.
Together4ever
We were told his are "in Washington". I think, but I'm not sure, that the prints still have to be physically matched one by one on a computer monitor. And of course, we're all standing in line. I just am very curious what exactly it is they do. Information fights anxiety and boredom I guess.
Allie&Leo
You are right. I did same thing. I hated not knowing how the process worked. I thought the fingerprints would be sent back to NVC and then to FBI. I emailed NVC and they had no record of having received anything back. I then emailed CDJ and asked them how process works. They told me they do them at the consulate. I guess it just depends how many resources each consulate has. Who knows.
May we both get good news very soon!! I had to say goodbye to a outside wedding in my mom's backyard because of this set back. Very depressing because my father passed away and I wanted to have wedding at house I grew up in. Hopefully I can make inside just as breathtaking as I had planned for the backyard.

Right now I think I would settle for a senile minister behind a dumpster!

Well if the prints are actually being done IN Cairo... oh boy. They're not known for creating sonic booms with their lightening speed.

Bottom line folks, if the name of your SO comes up with a hit, you will be screened by every single US Government "security related" Agency until cleared. This takes time.

I am sorry to hear that you are held up this way, but this is the new Homeland Security (DHS) requirement.

And yes, DHS overrides the State Department on matters of national security. The FBI is only one piece of the larger picture.

I worked for the USG and can back up the above, having conducted so many name traces. We checked the name and immediately forwarded results.

Hope you clear soon!

Well the FBI and everyone else collects fingerprints from everywhere... from crime and terror activities around the globe... a thumbprint here... index finger there... pinky finger here etc... but have no names to the prints. Now if he has a name that matches another bad guys name... they are going to take this full set of prints and try to match.. his pinky finger print for example... to everything they have collected. As long as his prints were not on a doorknob to some bomb making lab.. then he should be ok biggrin.gif
William33
Sorry, that is incorrect.

Fingerprints are often times, not available, for those with a name hit.

If the USG has no information or fingerprints on an individual, they liaison with foreign government law enforcement or intel agencies to clear an individual. This is where the "really long" delays stem from.

"False Hits" Problem: Consular posts however have recently been inundated with "false hits" from 7 million new names added to the NCIC database, including persons with convictions for minor offenses such as simple DUIs and shoplifting. Many visa applicants with common names with those in the database get a "false hit": the refers to when a visa applicant's name matches a name in the datebase but is NOT actually that same person in the database, just a person with a common or very similar name. This places the case into what is called "Administrative Review". Under current rules, the Consulate is required in this circumstance to receive full clearance from FBI (via the NVC) before Consulate can issue the visa. It may require a full fingerprint check and customized investigation. Full clearance from FBI (via the NVC) in most cases can take 4 to 6 weeks, but in some cases much longer and even months.

I'm not sure this helps.

Dude, I been on AP/AR a year. of course I have numbers.. 1001 of them.. huh.gif

That link won't work for those wrapped up in long term security checks. Particularly for those waiting for months and years.

Sometimes the hits are false and take a very long time to clear, as I advised above.

Shon,

I know that and am sorry to hear of the delay, in your SO arrival.

I was only offering some USG insight, from job experience, to help others understand.

I wish you luck in getting out of the security checks soon!!! good.gif

Thank you everyone for the information shared. It's helped me to form a much clearer picture of what's going on and that makes it easier to sit back a bit. I'm sure others undergoing the same thing will appreciate it too.
