Even tho Chex now has a wheat chex, and not just the rice and corn ones, its still not the same as Shreddies. They taste different, and the texture is not quite right.

I can't get home again until maybe November sometime (I'm hoping), and I can't afford to order on-line. So I'm just whinging. I Want Shreddies! *sniff*

A few years ago when my husband lived in Lenoir I found an organic brand that was almost just like Shreddies, better than Chex anyway, but I can't find it anywhere here in Morganton and I can't remember what brand it was.

I really miss those good good whole wheat Shreddies!

oooooo, I just thought of something! Cara is coming to Charlotte to visit, I should ask her to bring me some whistling.gif

ah well...I now return you to your regularly scheduled programme.

Shreddies live under a different name here but I believe it is the same thing.

Oh how I miss Smarites !!!!!!!!!!!

nope, Shreddies and Shredded Wheat are two completely different animals. Both made from wheat sure, but they're distant cousins at most.

Why is it Americans don't eat chips with gravy? My husband thought it was the strangest damn thing to put gravy on fries. I made him eat some a couple of times, he even tried poutine. He doesn't like gravy. but then I saw how his Mother used to make gravy....I don't blame him!

Is it November yet?

OK. there are foods that I miss too. A bit off that topic, can anyone tell me if it is possible to find Inner Science shampoo and conditioner in the US? I love that stuff and can't find it anywhere. It is a drug store shampoo made in Canada.

I just found boxes of Honey Maid graham crumbs at the local discount shop. I've been making Nanaimo bars with the Keebler type (which are okay but this felt like home). My biggest problem has been finding unsweetened coconut (which I finally did in speciality but not like in Canada where that's the easiest type to find...).

Of course, I thought I'd prepared well when I moved...I brought 4 cans of Byrd's custard powder with me. At 2 tablespoons needed per pan of bars, I won't be running out very soon... laughing.gif

Mars bars are US-based...you should be able to find them.

My hubby CAPS just found another link too...if you don't want to order in cases.

You just need to follow the simple translation (I'm assuming UK and Canada candy bars have the same names):

Mars Bar(UK) = Milky Way(US)
Milky Way(UK) = Three Musketeers

As far as I can tell, US Milky Ways taste the same as British Mars bars. Also:

Dark Chocolate Bounty(UK) = Mounds
Milk Chocolate Bounty(UK) = Almond Joy (except for the almond on top)

Not sure why the Milk Chocolate Bounty equivalent has an almond on top!

Chex is the weirdest thing to me, I first had them when I came here in Chex Mix. Upon eating them, I immediately called up my mum and told her:

"You'll never guess what they have here! Barbeque sauce flavoured Sheddies in a crisp bag!

Thanks for further explaining it. We actually have them branded as Mars bars here in Washington state, not Milky Way (which we also have). So when I look for the old Canadian Mars bar, I grab a US Mars bar. (Of course I don't, because I don't like them much. laughing.gif)

To my knowledge in Canada (at least west coast) you can't get a dark chocolate Bounty so I always had Neilsen's Coconut bar. Which is happily available on the second link I posted. smile.gif

I can't find Mars anywhere. Casey said he was sure they had them but can't find them either. Milky Way is not a mars. Totally different.

I got a Milky Way out of the vending machine at work the other day. The label was marked "Made in Canada" I thought that was funny biggrin.gif

Yeah, I thought as much. I wonder what Cristy is on about then?

Maybe they taste slightly different due to chocolate etc, but basically a Milky Way in the USA is exactly the same candy bar as a Mars Bar.

Whatever, my favorite are Dime (Daim) bars, which are thankfully available in IKEA in the USA. wink.gif

Oh Brother.

A Mars Bar in Canada IS NOT THE SAME AS A MILKY FRIGGIN WAY.

They are similar but different. A Milky Way in the US is the same as a Milky Way in Canada.

A Mars Bar, is smaller in length, thicker and is more dense. The taste is in the same family but it is not as light and fluffy.

Woah, it's a chocolate bar. Relax! No need to shout! LOL laughing.gif

I grew up in BC where there are no Milky Way chocolate bars available unless one gets them across the border in Washington. The Mars bar I could get in BC is the same as the Mars bars I get here in Washington...tastes pretty much the same with the exception of the typical differences in the chocolate.

I can't speak to the UK side of the house, nor can I speak to eastern Canadian stuff or where Cristy is now living. However the nougat, caramel, milk chocolate combo is the one I know of as a Mars bar. As for density etc., I don't know; I rarely eat them.

Now, Snickers...that's a chocolate bar. wink.gif

Can't resist gloating--there are THREE IKEA's within 161 km of my home (Beltsville and Towson in MD; Springfield in VA).

Also, ceriserose your attitude of "it's a chocolate bar" is rather inapt--as the quality of the chocolate makes a massive difference (certainly you can't say that a Tobler bittersweet is the same as a Cursey's "Special Dark" tongue.gif )

OK. Perhaps this is the issue. In 2002 they changed the Mars Bar in the UK to be lighter, and the chocolate less think. I guess they made it more like a US Milky Way.

I said I have never eaten the ones you described, not that I haven't seen them. Not having eaten them I can't comment on their taste differences or similarities. (Although knowing that one is European chocolate and the other is from Canada/US I would hazard your point is that the Tobler is superior...which I wouldn't argue as European chocolate tends to be superior to Canada/US chocolate.) yes.gif

Of course, now that you've explained your making up a whole new word for one of them, I have actually eaten one of the Special Dark bars. Maybe even two. tongue.gif I still can't compare them since the only Tobler I've ever had was the regular kind.

My new chocolate like is Dagoba organic chocolate.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from. Kit Kats in the UK and the US are visually identical, but sadly US Kit Kats taste like crap.

Its just my opinion that Mars Bars/Milky Ways and Snickers are some of the few US candy bars that don't taste that different from their European cousins. I guess the European ones aren't like the Canadian ones.

There are (or were) two slightly different products known as the Mars Bar. Both contained nougat topped with caramel and covered with milk chocolate. However, the product formerly sold as Mars in the USA contained almonds in the nougat, whereas the Mars still sold elsewhere does not. The chocolate bar that is known as the Mars Bar outside the USA is very similar to the bar known as Milky Way within the United States.

QUOTE
Mars within the USA

The Mars Bar was introduced in the United States in 1936. It contained nougat and almonds topped with caramel and covered with milk chocolate. It remained on the market until 2000 when it was renamed the Snickers Almond bar.
[edit]

Mars elsewhere

The US Milky Way, upon which the non-US Mars Bar is based, was invented by Frank Mars in 1920. [2]

From Summer 2006, all Mars Bars sold in Canada are peanut free. Mars is one of the few chocolate bars in North America for which no size of the product has any trace of peanuts (another example is Nestle Aero).

Reson for Kit Kat difference is all-too-simple.

UK and Canuck Kit Kat are made by Nestle (Swiss), while US Kit Kat is made by (as you may have surmised) Cursey's.

There is also a Canuck brand Nielsen which produces reasonable candies--such as Jersey Milk and Rosebuds (closest counterpart is UK Dairy Milk bar, no US equivalent).

I just found out that we have a GC appointment on 2006-10-13--so our planned trip to Calgary (where we can stock up Laura Secords) is that much closer. yes.gif biggrin.gif smile.gif
