I was wondering what the few irish people on VJ did to transport their personal belongings to the states. I have checked a few companies and their prices seem excessive to say the least.Is 240 euro normal for 30kg. I would say we have an excess of 120kg+ to transport as i have my stuff and my fiance's as well.

Aer lingus are a bit pricey as well see below

Consider yourself lucky...Virgin charges $120 per excess.

£35 doesn't seem too unreasonable...a lot better than 240 euros for 30 kg. But is there a limit to how much excess you can have?

were in euroland so its 65 euro a bag.I may ring aer lingus and see what they say.

Suggestion ... call AerLingus about their cargo rates. I shipped with Iberia cargo and it was by far the cheapest way. Only disadvantage was that we had to collect at Indianapolis airport ourselves.

I came from Dublin to JFK with all my worldly possessions last May. I looked into shipping and decided it was too expensive so I decided to just bring what was most precious to me. I brought two large bags I was hoping wouldn't be over 32Kg each. One bag was bigger and I had packed a smaller bag inside that so when the check-in guy told me it was over 50kg I was able to open up the bag and take out the smaller one. Now I had three pieces of luggage and I was fully prepared to pay the excess baggage but I also had my cat with me which I paid 100 euro for and the guy decided not to charge me the excess. I was flustered and nervous and I think he felt sorry for me.

It seems to me the quickest and easiest way to get your things here to to just take them with you and pay the excess.

another option that we're using is to send stuff over one bag at a time.

I just came back from visiting, and only brought one bag over so i was able to take one of hers back with me as well. Her parents are coming over for the wedding, so they will each bring one more bag of hers over. We will collect the remaining stuff, if any, at our christmas trip.

If there are some things you can do without right in the beginning, free is alot cheaper than shipping it or paying for extra bags.

Thats what my parents suggested instead of us forking out hundreds to transport stuff over. Only problem is that my gf has alot of heavy books to bring over as she is an OT.

I just recently moved over from Cork to Indianapolis. I just took two big bags with me, just the essential stuff. No problems checking it all in, i just told them i was moving to the states and these were all my worldly possessions, so wasn't charged any extra, even though i know i was far in excess of the allowance. Of course it helped that the check in scales at Cork Airport were knackered!

I would suggest making a list of things that you have at home that you want to bring over and then as people are coming over for visits/wedding etc just get them to bring it over piece by piece. Its far cheaper than shipping it. And sure you probably won't want that arran sweater anyhow when its 40c and you're sitting on a beach in Florida!

We went to the main Post Office in Dublin, the one in O'Connell. It was a lot cheaper than all the other companies we have checked out. We shipped 5 big boxes for a approx 150 euros. We brought all the important items with us as luggage and the ones we can afford to wait a little longer such as books, blankets we bought in Ireland that were handmade, etc we shipped via the An Post. All arrived within 2 weeks and all intact. So, check out the An post and see if it would be cheaper for you.

Try UPS they have very decent prices!!!!!!!!! 200 Kg in up to 20 boxes is 800 Euro from Germany to the US ,don't think there's a lot of a difference from ireland.

Shipping is very expensive in Ireland...
I tried to pack as much as i could in the 2 bags also my fiance went to visit me before and i gave him bags to bring back with him....
I just went to exceed lugguage at the times it was 50 Euro per bag....

There is a book rate for books.. slow, but much, much cheaper.
We sent things from Greece via plain old mail and got all the ehavy things over that way.. didn't cost us much more than $150US for several boxes (3 or 4, can't remember).
The rest in the luggage, the balance sold up.
