Hi all,
do you know how long it takes to get the marriage licence in order to marry
and what docs might be needed besides the passport or the I.D. for it?
If you want to have your wedding celebrated by a priest which docs might
be required (besides the marriage licence)? Since I'm still in Italy I might get
any docs before coming to the US if it is required by a wedding celebrated
by a priest.
Thanks for any reply!!!!!!

It really depends on where you are getting married (what State). If you tell us where you plan to get married it will help.

My husband and I were married here in the State of Georgia. After the wedding, the pastor allowed us to take our certificate to the Probate Court office to have it certified and recorded. If he had mailed it in (he was aware that we were needing the certificate to file AOS) then it might have taken a couple weeks. Check with your state's marriage certificate department and see if you can bring it in yourselves. Best wishes!

Here in Illinois (DeKalb County) we got the marriage license and had to wait a day before we could marry (we waited about a week and half). All we needed from me (the non USC) was my passport and long form birth certificate.
We got married at a small chapel and they submitted the paperwork the Monday after we got married. When we returned from our honeymoon a week after our wedding the certificate was already at our house waiting for us.
It really depends what state and what county that you are getting married in.

Here in Massachusetts we had to go and get our licence 3 days before we needed it, all I took was my passport... we were able to take the licence back ourselves and we got our marriage certificate there and then.... in fact we got 4 copies as we knew we needed to send some away...
I am not sure what would be required for the priest... you would need to contact the church and find out what they would require...

All of this advice is pretty useless unless the OP says where they are getting married. Rules for different States can vary massively.

No dr_lha it is not useless.... it is our expirence and we are sharing it with the OP.... I am sure she has worked out that she will need to check with the state where she is going to live... but our expirences give her an idea of what other have done....

OK.
From my experience its best to get a marriage license drunk off your arse with 30 of your best friends, family members and fiancee at 3am in the morning, followed by a trip to a strip club (girls in one, boys in another).
Highly recommended (although sadly no longer possible due to recent changes in Nevada).
My point was originally, that one thing that most people new to the USA fail to grasp is how different laws are in different states, counties and even cities. If the OP posts where they plan to get married, then maybe someone who has experience at least of that state can help them out.
Otherwise the OP might enter the process with the wrong info if they base it off your experience alone.

it clearly states in each of the above posts something along the lines of this... "that this is how it was done in my State but you need to check how it is done in your State".... they aren't saying that this is how it is done across the board so I really don't know what the problem is here

Hmmm....I do believe I stated what the experience was like for my husband and me....AND I do believe I also stated that she check with the state in which she was to be married in.
