well i won't start rejoicing yet but i called the SSN local office today and they said that a number was issued to me yesterday so i should get it in the mail within 10 - 15 days.

You can go into the office to get the number and be issued an SSN Verfication Printout if you don't feel like waiting for the card. Make sure you say the Printout is for an employer or they might try charging you.
