My hubby went to take his permit (he was able to take the written test in Arabic) and road test today...he was nervous so I tried to calm him down at the same time I was a nervous wreck. But he played a joke on me...He called me at work and told me I'm sorry but i failed the road test and I was like I'm sorry maybe next time...all of the sudden he's like GOTCHA, I did it I did it. I could have reached out and choked him through that phone.

I told everyone in my office most were very happy for us except one....she was like "oh okay" She was such a sourpuss but she didn't spoil my day.... no0pb.gif no0pb.gif

Yippie my hubby got his driver's license today kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

Now all we have to do now is find a good used car thats within our budget (payments wise)

So far I've called 2 car lots and they were like noooo u wont be able to find a car for $3000.00 those type of cars are junk, let me put you in a nice car with reasonable payments, come by and check me out. All we want is a car to get around in that we can afford and where the insurance premiums won't cost an arm and a leg. Maybe soon we will be able to afford a better car but as for now i would think that nice used car is good for our budget.

My hubby called our family in Egypt and mom and grandmother was like "Don't drive fast, be careful" Grandfather was like "no no you don't need a car take the bus its safer." He was trying to explain to them that they wouldn't have given him a driver's license if he didn't perform his test well.

Okay opinion time: Do you think $3000.00 is too less for a used car (we will be applying for a auto loan) ? What are good models and yrs? By the way we are looking for an automatic.

I am sooo proud of my hubby good.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

Just a note his driver's license will expire when his green card does, which is July 2007.
He was told when he gets a new green card to bring it in and they will renew his license

I don't know if you can get too much for 3,000 probably a car with tons of miles from the 80's or early 90's would be my guess.

Congrats!

Maybe he should get a moped? haha

Congrats! I think you could find w/ some searching a good used Toyota (camry's are one of the highest rated, safest cars on the road) and they go and go and go. It's worth a look-see anyhow. Good luck, I hope you find something suitable! good.gif

You can find some good used cars for $3000. Just make sure you take someone with you to look under the hood. You don't want to by a car that's going to need more money than you are buying it for. My husband bought a 97 Nissan Sentra that had a lot of milage, and he put at least another 40k on it and it ran and ran. Sad to say, he was hit on the drivers side which made the door jam and the car was no longer aloud to be on the road. But it stil ran and we would still drive it on the back roads to the store! lol! We were going to get a new Nissan Sentra, but opted for a new Saturn. I'm wishing for a Nissan Sentra for myself now! Good luck car shopping!

You should be able to find a suitable car for that price, if you just need it to get you around town. However, you may have a problem getting a loan for an older car, unless you have excellent credit. I tried to get a loan for a car a few years ago, and they said they only offered loans for cars 3 years or newer. That was a credit union, though, so I guess banks could be different.

Good luck, and congrats to your husband on passing the test! Woo!

my credit union will loan on used cars I think up to 5 or 6 yrs old - but maybe at a slightly higher rate... not sure what a regular bank would do... again, good luck good.gif

Congratulations to your husband kicking.gif kicking.gif I remember how exciting this was. My husband studied the book but they told him he could take the written in Arabic (and many other languages available) so he did. biggrin.gif

So happy for you both and glad to hear that they can take the test in Arabic.

I would have to agree in looking for a Toyota or Nissian as they last for a long time with very little maintainence. Just make sure you have soemone check the heads to make sure that the gaskets are good cos that is the only thing that usually happens when they have around 200,000 miles on them but if that is ok they will keep going. Good luck on your search.

Honda's are good too. When I was 16 I got an '87 Honda civic hatchback (don't be jealous) and it had over 100,000 miles on it and it was pretty cheap and it never had problems except for when i backed into someone. I loved that car!

Hi everyone,

Thanx for the replies and advice. I checked with my credit union and they said that as long as the car isnt older than 10 years(1996 and up to present) I could apply for a loan for it. She also said if i qualified that I could possibly get a loan for $5000.00 and keep my payments around $150.00 a mth, but again it all depended on my credit score so we will see.

I'm hoping the car dealership will allow me to take pics of some of the cars so i can choose and if i can maybe I will post the pics here and the specs so maybe as to get some advice here.

Take care

Congratulations on the license !! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

Best of luck finding a good used car -- I also am partial to Hondas and Toyotas, as I've had very good experiences with them. I have a Camry that's more than 10 years old now and it's still rolling along great !

My husband likes bigger vehicles -- he's driving a '99 Explorer right now. We got a really good deal on it from my employer -- they let employees bid on the old company cars as they replace the fleet. It had high mileage, but otherwise in good condition, and I knew it had been regularly maintained. So something told me to go ahead and bid it on for $2005.00 -- and we got it ! Beat out the next highest bid by just 5 bucks.... kicking.gif
