It takes about 4 weeks for both cards to arrive (under separate cover). She doesn't need to wait for the SS# either:

Employers may hire candidates who have applied for, but not yet recieved, their Social Security Card.

http://tinyurl.com/3aqah6
Do legal aliens need a Social Security number to work?

Question
We are a company who is hiring legal aliens without Social Security numbers. Do they need a number to work, or just a work permit?

Answer
You are required to get each employee's name and Social Security number and to enter them on Form W-2. (This requirement also applies to resident and nonresident alien employees.) You should ask your employee to show you his or her social security card. The employee is required to show the card, if available. You may, but are not required to, photocopy the Social Security card if the employee provides it.

A non-U.S. citizen employee who does not have a Social Security number may apply for one by completing Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card. To apply for a card, he or she will need to complete Form SS-5 which is available for download. Or they may obtain Form SS-5 by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting the local Social Security office.

The employee will need to submit Form SS-5 with evidence of age, identity and current authorization to work from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). (The application cannot be filed by the employer.) The immigration document may be acceptable as evidence of both identity and authorization to work in the United States. All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency.

To apply for a replacement card, the employee will need to submit Form SS-5 with evidence of identity and current authorization to work from the DHS. We cannot accept photocopies of documents. We need original documents or copies certified by the custodian of the record. Notarized copies are also not acceptable.

If the employee is a noncitizen, we must verify their documents with the (DHS) before we issue a card. We will issue the card within two days of receiving verification from DHS. Most of the time, we can quickly verify documents online with DHS. If DHS can't verify the documents online, it may take several weeks or months to respond to Social Security's request.

Employers may hire foreign workers who have applied for and are waiting to receive Social Security numbers and cards. The employee may work while the Social Security number application is being processed. If your employee applied for an SSN but does not have it when you must file Form W-2, enter "Applied for" on the form. When the employee receives the SSN, file Form W-2c, Corrected Wage and Tax Statement, to show the employee's SSN.

Note that these are SSA's instructions to employers.

FYI: those who apply for an Immigrant Visa (CR/IR) can use a program called Ennumeration At Entry. They can apply for a SS# on the last page of their DS-230 and the info is entered when they arrive in the US. SSA automagically generates the account and mails you a SS card.
This program is NOT available for K visa holders.

The program works MOST of the time. smile.gif

Goodluck kath! That sounds quite exciting! I hope you don't run into too much misfortune while volunteering there. I know I'd be heartbroken to see a lot of the things that go on there, but then again there are lots of happy things like babies! hehe.

I hope you get the pharmacy volunteer thing smile.gif

YOu holding up well with your mum and everything? Is she doing better?

Who here had their fiance(e) with them at their Sydney Interview?

ugh.. it wouldn't let me finish my edit to the last post. I'm sorry for the triple post guys.. But i tried to edit this question in but it wouldn't load it afterwards.. or update my edit...

Anyways.. here goes!

I only gave him the evidence that I had submitted for the I-129F petition at the Vermont Service Center (well I had duplicates of those same evidence).
I didn't give him any new evidence because when we submitted our petition to VSC he was still here and we had really recent evidence like his boarding pass and the fact that it doesn't show him leaving till after they received and sent us our NOA1. I read in one of the guides here in VJ that the "ongoing relationship" evidence should date to issuance of NOA1. That is covered I believe by what I sent to VSC.

I didn't give him any new evidence except a few more pictures of us together when he was here visiting, and a new letter of intent that states that i'm still fully supporting our decision for him to get a visa and come over here to marry me.

Do you think that's okay as far as evidence goes because it seemed to have pleased VSC enough to give me my approval in 20 days. Or do you think I should have sent him more. I sent him all the documents/copies today. smile.gif Should arrive in about a week! woot!

We're going to work on his DS-230 and DS-156 and finish up his form for a police check request, he's done the fingerprint part he has to mail the application to the AFP or whatever to get his police check.

Any advice will be great!! Sorry for the long post!

Do you have to fill out an affidavit of support? What supporting documentation does it ask for?
serendipitous
Yeah we completed an affidavit of support and got it notarized already. We included that in the packet that I sent off today. I didn't meet income requirements so my parents filled one out for me as a sponsor. I included my I-134 as well as my stepdad's.

I don't know what supporting document it asks for to be honest.. I just read the guidelines from VJ that listed things I should send over to the beneficiary.

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...mp;page=k1guide

^Scroll to the bottom it lists things that the petitioner should send over to the beneficiary. I followed those guidelines just wanted some clarification from others who have gone through this the type of evidence they sent to the beneficiary for the interview.

And if you go here:

http://www.visajourney.com/consulates/inde...&cty=Sydney

It's specific info about the Sydney Consulate. I found it VERY useful it pretty much summarizes a lot of things into very understandable terms. I didn't even know it was there till some very kind person directed me to it smile.gif If you haven't checked it out, you should it's very helpful smile.gif

hi seren
with your affidavit of support did you enclose orginals of your parents tax details..the w2's and the 1040's...we took to the interview 3 years of tax assesments and bank statements...and also a letter from his employer stating his earning and how long robert had been working there..

robert came with me to the interview they just asked him one question although i could of done it on my own it was good support..he will be fine im sure as long as he has everything in the order they ask for....read some of the reviews also that would help...

im holding up pretty well thanks i was much better after hearing my mums voice and she is going well she is a tough little pommie...lol

i found this in the herald sun today might be interesting for the ones that are leaving oz soon..

Just a quikie...

I was wanting to withdraw our petition in Vermont -- I thought I would just send mail to the addy we sent the I-130 to. Does anyone know if theres another mailing address or even an email to withdraw a petition? Its not fair to those who are waiting in Vermont if my case is being worked on when it doesnt need to be.

Thanks for any help!

sere - great story on how ya guys met! as far as the interview, not sure about the K1 -- but it has been said that as long as you have the paperwork ready, the interview itself is pretty dang easy.

Paul - i was the same way -- I couldnt sleep the night b4 the interview, and just kept triple checkin everything!

Hope Steph finds a job soon!

Thanks for the info Mo.

Kath - thats pretty neat toy you got there!

Off the visa topic here............thought i'd ask some fellow Aussies.... We have a DVD collection here that we are hoping to bring with us. But as they are PAL and not NTSC we are wondering if you can buy a multi region palyer over there?

We have a few NTSC ones here and they play on our DVD as it's multi region. Can you purchase these sort of players over there? If so where from?

You've asked at the right place Emerald. I'm not an Aussie but I do watch lots of non-US region coded stuff. wink.gif

I bought a nice inexpensive Philips DVP-642 player. It has a simple region hack so now I can play everything woohoo. I bought this at Walmart and then applied the simple hack to make it region free.

I got it at Walmart, but you can get it anywhere on the internet. It should be around $50-$60 at most.

Philips DVP642

If you want other places sell it too already preprogrammed with the hack but it's so simple (done via the remote control) that I wouldn't pay the silly $30-$40 markup.

Here is the hack...

1. Connect player and power it up
2. Open disc tray
3. Press the Disc Menu button (not system menu)
4. Press 7, 8, 9, Ok, 0
5. A message will appear saying 'Old region code = 1'... New region code = 0'
6. Open your favourite drink and enjoy your dvds!

Let me know if you have any problems. Good Luck!
Kath
hi ya emerald

i also brought quite a few over with me...they wouldnt work on robbies dvd player so for my birthday last year robert got me a portable dvd player...and they work just change the region to pal stick um in and bobs ya uncle...

if your going to shop for them take a couple of your favs with you and request a demo to see if your aussie dvd's will work before buying...look for fully compatible with dvd .. although it is a portable dvd player it can be plugged into your tv to watch...

robert got me a portable one so we could take it on holidays...cant wait for july havent been camping for a few years..not looking forward to sorting out the pop up camper though lol

shame i didnt know you vylex when we were looking for one lol but i have copied and pasted it in a word doc for future reference...thanks

Hi Kath,

LOL, well moving forward, I'd love to help out on any techie topics. I am a little too obsessed with all things electronic. I wish the Consulate/USCIS accepted media for evidence as well. I can send them loads of my "video-grams" to my wife LOL. The want it streamed? DVD-PAL/NTSC? Podcast? LOL. I'll overload their servers until they say UNCLE and grant her Visa! laughing.gif

I have another question guys.. lol

here it says:

"Other Forms (if any)? 1. processing fee receipt: AU$130 for each applicant. Go to any post office , pay the fee, and obtain one receipt for each applicant, attached to the outside cover of each passport. Valid passport (and any expired passports bearing United states visas)"

http://www.visajourney.com/consulates/inde...&cty=Sydney

So do we go to the Post to pay this fee before the interview? Or do you do this after you have received notice that you've been approved for a visa?

Kath
hi ya seren

if you go to one of the other pages i posted my receipt for the payment of the K1 visa...you go into any post office prior to the interview..and paper clip it to the front of his passport...
if he has any other passports he has used to enter the states he takes them with him to the interview...he 1 applicant so he pays one fee..

vylex im with you on the video evidence mate...hell you could put it on a cd for um to look at huh...lol

hi ya lyndel i see ya there hope the op went well with you and your recovering well mate...which one are ya donald or mickey mouse or minny lol take care mate..

Hi All...smile.gif

Thanks for that information Mo will look out for the question when filling in the form.

The volunteer thing is a great idea Kath; for all those reasons you stated and for keeping busy also and to keep your spirits up which is important when job-hunting..and don't I know it...!!! You never know a paying job may come of it..

Took J to the Melbourne Aquarium on the weekend, it was ok; not as WOW as I'd thought it would be..but then I've been scuba-diving before and nothing is quite like the real thing..would love to have time & $ to take him to Airlie Beach and the whitsundays or the Great Barrier Reef for some scuba-diving before we go back..

Tis the long wait now for the NOA2 reading.gif ClockWatch2.gif but he's busily finishing the Affidavit of Support and getting his taxes in order, which he should cover nicely on his own now; save hassling his mum who has her hands full at the mo.

Cheers,

Pris.

Hello All! smile.gif

Last week was like th week from hell from me. I am for "now" stuck at a job that I hate. It is a temporary job and I was told back in Feburary that I would become permanent and when I inquired about it last week she said they had been turning it down. But Friday I found out that a guy that started after me became permanent like 2 weeks ago. So I feel like I am getting the run around. She says she has no problems with my work but I just don't think she is keen on me. So I am back to applying for jobs which sucks. I will just have the temp agency type of a letter explaining my current job status. I am just so emotional drained and depressed at this place I have got to get out of it.

My sweettheart has been so supportive and sweet. I love this man to death. He is like my sunshine. I can't wait to start my life with him. He makes everything calm and peaceful. I hope this last part of this process moves along smoothly.

I hope that everything is well for you all.

Kath- I hpe your mother is feeling better.

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jo and i was invited to this thread by Kath (thanks Kath!! smile.gif ) I'm from Melbourne and my fiance and i have just received our NOA2 on the 20th of March for the K-1 visa. I am hoping that there are others who are also from Melbourne in the same boat as us with hopefully similar timelines who may be able to give me some advise on what i should do next.

I have not yet received packet 3 but was wondering whether i should wait to get that before starting the medicals and the police checks. Does anyone know how long it takes for the police check to clear? and what kind of vaccinations i will need etc? Any advise would be greatly appreciated!! smile.gif

I have also been told that its about a month wait for the interview? Is that pretty accurate? When should i expect to approximately receive an interview date? Is it after i send in the required forms with the packet 3?

I know that is a lot of questions. If there is also anyone out there who is about to start the process and have any questions that i may be able to help with, just give me a yell!!

Hope to hear from you all soon

Hey Moonie,

Soz work is givin you da shts, I know all about that; sometimes you just gotta keep moving till you find the most suitable one...keep your objective in mind and you will be right; find something you do like about it no matter how small and hang in there...it'll all fall into place in time..

Hi Jo,

Welcome smile.gif Which part of Melbourne are you from? I'm a Melbournian also (Elwood), but I'm going for permanant residency- CR-1/IR-1. I can tell you tho that getting the fingerprint police check is very easy; you just ring for an appointment (check the vicpolice website for that) at the Flinders Street address - World Trade Centre really and it gets sent to you about two weeks later max and $120 later.

People here will tell you where to find which vaccinations you need, I'm actually doing that at the moment and I'm not sure where I've put it or found it to be honest, so I will be reading along to make sure.

Welcome and feel free to share how you met etc....smile.gif

I am so glad to come here and see how everyone is progressing. Things are doing well for us too. Sorry i haven't been around much, but I will be looking in here more often now that Loke is always working (both sad and happy I suppose)

Hi Poi_n_J, nice to meet you! Thanks for the info on the police check. I will keep it in mind as I plan out my time before interview. Hopefully not too long till then!!

I'm from the east side of Melbourne (Rowville). I dont think i've been to Elwood before but i've certainly heard of it.

I met my fiance 3 years and 3 months ago now. We both happened to be on the same contiki tour in New Zealand and thats how we met. He was based in Sydney at the time and so we travelled to and from to see each other for the first 2 years of our relationsip. I guess you could say we are pros now at long distance. He moved to Melbourne in our third year together but unfortunately due to home sickness and his visa expiring, he had to go back to the states - hence why we are doing this. We could have tied the knot earlier but i guess we wanted to make sure this is what we both want and the best way of doing it is to be apart for a bit. Its hard when you are both from two different parts of the world. I'm sure everyone here appreciates that. The good thing is that i went to Boston (where he is) for a week during Christmas just passed and i helped him clean our future apartment together and helped pick out furniture. It makes it easier knowing where you will be living etc.

I am very new to this site so i hope everyone will share their experiences with me - that is, how you all met, what kinds of visas you are all going for and the ups and downs of this journey.

On the lighter note - for those that are already in USA, do they sell Milo there?? haha.

On the lighter note - for those that are already in USA, do they sell Milo there?? haha.
Jo

Hi Jo,

I forgot to add you can get the Police Check asap as it is valid for a year..!

I know where Rowville is but it's been a while since I've been in that direction; I work on St Kilda Road. It is always wonderful hearing everyone's story here as they are all so different and interesting. I hear what you say; at the beginning of ours I would think to myself - trust me to fall in love with someone over the other side of the world; as if I haven't had enough challenges...lol.

I don't believe I've told my story on here: J and I met on an astrology forum of which he was a member of for a few years and I about a year - one that has become a 'family' of sorts to both of us; that is to say we knew of each other by username only and even then not really because our first impressions of the other weren't very apealing lol.. One day by chance I saw him in the live room of which there was only one shared one and decided to go in to say hello as he appeared as bored as I was at the time..sparks flew and from msn to phone calls over a couple of weeks the plane ticket was sought after and I landed in Arizona seven weeks later, after the best two weeks of my life with another we decided to go for the visa which was the best way to be together asap.. luv.gif

Hey Rings!

Good to 'see' you....soz to hear Loke will be working more...but your journey seems to be progressing quite well; hopefully it won't be too long. smile.gif

Cheers,

Pris.

Hi Jo,

Welcome to the Aussie Forum! Everyone is great in here, very supportive so feel free to ask if you need any information. smile.gif Btw I used to live in Boronia not far from you. Am living in Canberra with my parents now until I go in April!!! Yay!! biggrin.gif

The Police Certificate can take up to 3 weeks to process and in some states (like mine ACT) it can also take about 3 weeks to get an appointment for finger printing, so that's 6 weeks in total. Well that's how long mine took. The medical only took about 2 weeks from the time I had my appointment to when I had the report in my hands.

Both yours and Pris's stories of how you met are lovely. It's funny how things happen, I love hearing how couples have met on here.

Cheers
Lyndel

Hey Moonie,

Soz work is givin you da shts, I know all about that; sometimes you just gotta keep moving till you find the most suitable one...keep your objective in mind and you will be right; find something you do like about it no matter how small and hang in there...it'll all fall into place in time..

Yes my focus has to be on finding somewhere else that better suits my talents. I walked in this morning I left early Friday and this place looks a mess. I am not even going to touch it. Not going to let what other's do stress me.

But in good news. I got a text at 3 something in the morning that my sweetie received his packet 3. He said it is all confusing. LOL I think it is cute. I told him just take one thing at a time.

Hi Folks,

Just re-iterating what's been going on for the potential DCFers in this thread...

If you are a USC living in Oz with your spouse it looks like DCF is back. However, for the others like me (spouse not living abroad) that were attempting to petition in person at the Consulate, it doesn't look like they offer that favor anymore. I might email them just in case they would let me do it again but here are the details from the Sydney Consulate Website

Filing of Immigrant Visa Petitions in Australia
American citizens, including members of the armed forces, who are resident in Australia may file immigrant visa petitions for immediate relative (IR) classification at the U.S. Consulates General in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth. The consular officer will determine whether your petition can be adjudicated at the Consulate or whether it will require adjudication by a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office.

The Consulate General in Melbourne accepts petitions by appointment only. Please e-mail MelbourneACS@state.gov to schedule an appointment to lodge your petition.

The Consulate General in Sydney accepts petitions by appointment on Thursdays (except U.S. and local public holidays) between 8:00am and 11:45am. Please e-mail SydneyPetitions@state.gov to schedule an appointment to lodge your petition.

The Consulate General in Perth accepts petitions on a walk-in basis Monday to Thursday (except U.S. and local public holidays) between 8:30am and 11:30am.

If the petition is approved, your spouse/child/parent will need to complete all documentary requirements, including medical examinations and police clearances, and have an interview with a consular officer in Sydney before an immigrant visa is approved and issued. For information on documentary requirements for U.S. immigrant visas or scheduling appointments at the Consulate, please see below.

For further information on filing immigrant visa petitions, please refer to the USCIS website.

Consular Offices Abroad Resume Accepting I-130 Immigrant Visa Petitions

Effective immediately, consular posts abroad will accept petitions for immediate relative immigrant classification from American citizens who are resident in their consular districts, including members of the armed forces, as well as true emergency cases, such as life and death or health and safety, and others determined to be in the national interest.

As of January 22, 2007, consular offices abroad were instructed to cease accepting certain immigrant visa petitions because consular officers lacked the means to perform the required criminal background checks on American citizen petitioners, as required by the Adam Walsh Act.

Subsequently, the Department of State and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) worked to develop a mechanism whereby USCIS will perform these required "Adam Walsh Act" checks for any petitions accepted abroad by consular officers.

To demonstrate residency in a consular district, American Citizen petitioners must be able to show that they have permission to reside in the consular district and that they have been doing so continuously for at least six months before filing the petition. Individuals who are in the country on a temporary status, such as student or tourist, would not be considered to meet the residency standard.

Examples of family emergency include minor children who would be unexpectedly left without a caretaker. Examples of national interest include facilitating the travel of United States military and other USG direct hire employees assigned overseas who are pending transfer on orders and need to petition for immigrant classification of their spouse and minor children at posts overseas.

All lawful permanent residents, and American Citizens resident in the United States or with a permanent address in the United States, must file I-130 petitions at the USCIS Service Center having jurisdiction over their place of residence (as indicated on the USCIS website: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-130.pdf).

Hope to hear from you all soon

Jo

Welcome Jo!!
My soon to be hubby is from Melbourne as well. I've visited for a total of 9 months so far, and I fell in love with it! I hope you the best on your visa journey. We can definitely try to answer questions you may have through the process. I know I've asked a bunch and everyone was very helpful. smile.gif

Lyndel!! My soon to be hubby lives in boronia!! I use to walk around there all the time. When everyone was at work, I use to go to Knox and hang out at the Coffee Club! I love that place. Especially their mochas. heheh. Their food was especially good too. He probably lives about 3 blocks from the train station in Boronia. That's so freaky how the world seems so small these sorta details are so cool, realize how close knit everyone in this world really is.

Aww you didn't comment on my details of meeting haha (just kidding!). Mine wasn't that great anyways, it was all online. tongue.gif

Did that one girl decide to buy your car? She seemed to be in love with it when you described how she was when she saw it. I hope she took that burden off of you one less thing for you to worry about before moving over!

I bet you're tons excited huh? About two weeks left isn't it?

Is the checklist thingy the form that says something like, you are ready to be interviewed and you have all the required documents.

So is that the "checklist?" Once you send that back, it verifies that you are ready for an interview correct? And then they will issue you the interview correct?

Just trying to make sure we understand everything.

We just sent back the DS230 yesterday via registered mail. But we didn't include the "checklist" because he didn't call to schedule an appt with the panel doctor yet for a medical examination. But he has one scheduled for the 17th of April and we figure that he'll have his police check by the next month as well (we sent the police application off yesterday as well).

So it's okay that we're sending off our DS230 and our "checklist" (whatever that is, until i get confirmation from you guys what it is lol) at different times right?

Thanks guys!

hi seren

take a look at some of tamazo's posts...she was asking the same questions as you are might help mate
i thought the checklist was what you had to get together for your interview...can you post a copy of what your talking about...

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...=27&st=1480

or just right click on tamzo name and see her posts about the packet 3...

just remind him to ask for a copy of the full medical if he isnt going to the one in the city.. question for ya ...has there been anymore doctors added to the melbourne list of doctors..if they have can you let us know or update the consulate embassey info for future reference...

i think he should be fine posting in the readiness form before the medical an police check..if your interview comes before he has them in hand just email them asap to ask for a reschedule...even suggest a date to them...

hope i was some help to you seren
