Okay my VJ pals, I want to hear the thoughts of our resident specialist concerning an Islam tradition.
Is it normal to marry during Ramadan? If not, why?

I don't think anything is wrong with it, more that it is usually avoided is what I have heard. My assumption is because Ramadan is a holy month, not meant for a lot of parties and festivities, so couples shy away from it. But again, this is just my guess. I want to hear the real deal from experts.

I am certainly no expert, but from what I understand, there is absolutely nothing from the Qur'an or ahadith statying marriages cannot happen during Ramadan. However, I think scholars have said that it may be difficult for a new couple to fast during the day (from sexual relations) and if they feel they cannot control themselves, it is probably better to wait.

If you marry during Ramadan, it wouldn't be the first time someone has done so, and isn't haram, but it is discouraged due to the emphasis on devotion to God rather than worldly concerns during that time.

Yes yes yes....that is exactly what I was thinking, but I had no idea how to put it in words. This is perfect. Does anyone know of a website that explains Ramadan and the traditions? I can't find one that explains it.

While I'm no expert (just an islamophile) we got married after Jummah during Ramadan last year - October 14th. My husband is quite serious about his faith and he saw nothing wrong with it. Iftars (the meal to break the fast) serve as a perfect party for the community to come together and celebrate your marriage.
Ramadan traditions vary country to country. I'm most familiar with traditions here *grin*
This Wikipedia article has the basics of what Ramadan is. For more traditional things, check out
Saudi Aramco World's articles on Ramadan. For some reason though, they don't have the one on america listed under Ramadan. I'll see if I can find it in my back issues tonight and post it tomorrow inshaAllah.

I just asked Mohammed, and he said there is nothing in Quran or hadith to keep one from marrying during Ramadan. But as it was said above, most don't due to not celebrating til after breaking the fast.

People in Yacine's family always avoided getting married during ramadan to avoid temptation to break the fast.

Religously there is nothing wrong with it as long as it doesn't interfere with the fast and Islamic requirements.
