faith11 and agentes,

First off, congratulations to both of you on your visa approvals.

If you don't mind, I have a few questions. Do you have a current list for Packets 3 and 4 for K-3 at Bogota? Could you point me towards the one you used? Our case will hopefully be headed towards NVC soon, but we want to be ready with everything well before the interview.

Also, beside picture captions and intimate details, what were the other interview questions about?

Thanks for your help. After 8 months of waiting in the USCIS backlog, we are itching to get things moving as quickly as we can with any shortcuts. Our anniversary is June 10. I seriously doubt we will get an interview before that, but it would be nice.

Congratulations! smile.gif

I will just dive in here with our interview experience....

Another thing: She was given back the Migratory Certificate from DAS. They told her they didn't need it, but my wife has never been out of the country. I wouldn't bank on them not needing it. Absolutely. You must obtain the migratorio even if it says that the beneficiary has never been out of the country.

All in all, I like the embassy. I wasn't there for the interview, but I was talking/emailing with the embassy during this entire process and they were great to me/us the whole time. We know they need to test the authenticity of these relationships, so my wife nor I are bothered by anything. Quite honestly, I wish other businesses gave me the type of service that I got from the embassy. My wife says they were very friendly in person too. This is kind of long, but I hope it helps someone. You must have been dealing with a different Bogota embassy than I was. Communicating with them was almost impossible for me and when I did talk to them they gave me bad information.

Here is a link to an immigration story everyone should read. Make sure that you have a discussion with the beneficiary about this article and tell him/her to report any inappropriate actions or requests immediately.

The thought of government officials taking advantage of vulnerable people just makes me furious.

That story is after the woman arrived in USA and has nothing to do with the US staff in Bogota. I guess you had a bad experience in Bogota but hundreds of others didn't. My fiancee also had a very easy time with the staff in Bogota as did some of her friends that have come after her. Do not equate a terrible person in the New York office with the US embassy staff in Bogota they do not deserve this. For most people, my understanding from talking to them has been - its very stressful to go through the process - don't put more stress on the people by saying things like you are saying. If you have a specific incidence that happened to you - tell us so others can learn from it and watch out for that. Most people that are rejected in Bogota have 1) Incomplete paperwork; and 2) Insufficient Financial support. Once they can overcome those they are approved. Unless you have criminal background etc. - few are rejected for the K1 or K3 in Bogota. Good Luck to all of you

Wait just a minute. There is no connection between my two posts. The fact that one follows the other is mere coincidence. I came here (one of my VJ homes) to provide what I thought was some valuable information to other members but before I posted the link to the New York Times article I replied to Agentes with congratulations. In addition, I posted agreement on one point and on another stated that my experience in trying to communicate with the embassy prior to the interview was not the same as his. In no way did I intend to use the second post as evidence of problems in the Bogota embassy.

In general I did not have a bad experience with the Bogota embassy other than the difficulty in communicating with them. Out of my 4 emails they replied to only 1 and I found it extremely difficult to get through to the embassy on the phone during the measely 2 hours per week they make themselves available.

With that said, I still believe the information in the article that I posted is important for everyone to know. If there are some bad immigration officials who will take advantage of vulnerable people in this process, than everyone needs to be aware. If this could happen in New York it could happen in Miami, Bogota, London, Montreal or anywhere in the process. Once I became aware of the article I felt obligated to encourage other people going through the process to be careful. Prior to reading the article it never occurred to me to have a discussion about unscrupulous immigration officials with Bella but you can bet we will have one now.

Yes, you are correct there is no connection between the staff in the Bogota embassy and the article. I never meant to imply that there was. If I inadvertently did so I apologize. However, the fact that the victim described in the article is colombiana, should help everyone in this forum realize that this is not something that can only happen to someone else. Everyone should be careful throughout the entire process from beginning to end.

The immigration process does not end when the visa is approved at the embassy. Yes, that is the focus of this forum but hopefully everyone here will soon be on to the next step and dealing with immigration officials in the US. If there are some immigration officals in the system who try to take advantage of vulnerable people (and the article pointed out there are more complaints than they have manpower to investigate) don't you think it is important that everyone knows this sooner rather than later? In addition, there are many people who monitor this forum who have already received their visas and are in the midst of the AOS process. I would feel terrible if one of them were victimized in the same way as the woman in the article so of course I wanted to make sure they were aware.

If you have been reading this forum you would know that I have always made a sincere effort to help others through the process just as many here have helped me. I have spent a great deal of time trying to provide whatever assistance I could to others with detailed posts of my experiences or by replying to many questions sent to me via pm. Frankly, I am insulted to now be lectured about how to provide assistance and to be accused of making the process more stressful than it already is. I just don't think that I deserve that.

Congratulations Colombianogringo! About time!!! Geez.

And to address the previous post, the only issue I had with the US Embassy in Bogotá were the first ladies you have to deal with. The were the biggest and most condescending women I have ever dealt with. They try to bite people's heads off if they don't have what they want or need and they still do it even when you are 100% ready. Other than that, I have no other complaints.

Thanks for this info, Diana. I've been trying to prep my fiance with everything she will encounter based upon what I have been reading here. Everyone here is a big help, and I hope things start to move more quickly. NOA 1 received in January, and nothing else as of yet. My trip to Barranquilla is tomorrow, and this will be great. I just wish I could have my Colombianita come home w/me...
ColombianoGringo
Thanks Diana. 236 days! The sad thing is that since our NOA1 there had been zero activity. The only touches were when I called on the RFE line. It looks like they approved our case in one day. Of course, our packages were flawless and loaded to hilt with pics and evidence. Now I'm looking forward to being able to move this thing forward.

I read here in the 'Guides' section that if a case moves too slowly, you could contact your Congress-person and they could prepare a formal inquiry as to why your case is moving so slowly. Perhaps, you should look into this. Because, your case is moving really slowly IMO. Who is your elected official there in Texas??? Get on the phone.
ColombianoGringo
One of my best friends works in the US House and looked into this for me. In fact, he used to be legislative director for the house member for my district.

The sad truth is that they can really do very little to expedite your case unless it is well beyond the current published USCIS processing times. Our case was technically within that timeframe.

We are now approved and hopefully things won't be so slow at NVC. It seems like K-3s are moving pretty quickly after approval.
Agentes
ColombianoGringo,

Thanks, we are happy we have finally gotten past the interview. For Packets 3 and 4 I am not sure where to begin except that basically what we used was a combination of what is on the embassy's website along with the info we got here. It may or may not help, but I did a post on our Packet 3. It should still be right here under my profile. Yeah, there were some minor discrepancies, but they all worked out in between Packet 3 and 4. Quite frankly in our case I think I was just being overly cautious; which is a good thing, but it was getting the best of me.

My wife went alone; and I explained my reasoning a few posts up, so I won't go into that again but if you are interested it is just a couple of pages back. I quizzed her on the questions and the details and the questions were the basics with a couple of tests thrown in there.

The basic questions:
How do you know your husband? (Internet Website - Never brought up IMBRA stuff)
How many times has he come to visit?
You are divorced? (I feel that was a test)
Has your husband ever been married? (Test)
Your husband has never been married?(Tested again)
Are you sure your husband has never been married? (More testing)
How long have you been married?
What does your husband do for a living?
<Asked for evidence> Focused on pictures and the pictures were actually ones that I submitted with my original application.

Yeah I had good communications with the embassy. I was surprised at the service I received because I did read other's posts, but I actually really liked their style. There was something that conflicted. It didn't turn out to be anything major since it was after the fact, but they were always nice, quick, and straight forward with me. I really liked that, and I would definitely give them a good rating on their customer service.

WOW!!!!!! Congrats to Faith and Argentes. I have been traveling alot and not been in cnnecton with the goings on here. Lot's of exciting news!!!
Paola is leaving this Monday the 17th to return to Colombia for a month. We had the DNA test done, called for another interview date for her son. It is Monday March 31!!! Paola is going down to attend the intewrview with her son and bring him back to the US.
I am a bit worried that she will have problems re-entering the US, given all the hassels that can come up. She has her travel doc's and everything else needed to re-enter the US. There should not be a problem. I am going to miss her badly while she is gone. She will return on April 22.

Hi Buck,

I am glad that Paola will be finalizing the issue with her son. This must have been emotionally distressing for her. Carina and I have started to worry about her 19 year old son also because of your experience. We have our interview on the 31st as well, so I hope that we will run into Paola.

Best of Luck,
Cameorn

Cameorn, They will be there!!!!!!! I will tell her to be on the look ouy for a fellow VJ'er.

Great Buck,
And I will keep an eye out for them as well. It would be fun to visit with someone else from VJ. I know that Osita will be there for her interview also and we will try to meet with her for dinner prior to. I have papers due and my final exam on the 31st also. I have no idea what my condition will be like on this day. Probably the same look as the fish in the blender!!

I am preparing my list of documents Bella and the kids need to leave Colombia and enter the US. Here is what I have so far:
Airline tickets
Passports with visas
Sealed packages that were delivered with the visas
Birth certificates

Is there anything else? We don't need a father's permission for the kids to leave Colombia because there is no father on the birth certificates. Do we need that huge chest X-ray? If we don't need it for POE, is it needed later?

Thanks!
Mononoke28
No, you don't need the x-rays at all, just the brown envelopes in which the visa is in with the passports.

I apologise for the duplicate post (Colombia Club AOS)!!!!
Hi all, I have a question and am hoping that perhaps someone here has been in a similar situation. Sandy and I would like to travel to her hometown of Barranquilla, later this year. We had a difficult time exiting Bogota airport with her daughter as the document from the child's father was beyond the 60 day allowance (or so we where told). Sandy and I are both very nervous about traveling back to Colombia with the child, for fear of further complications at the airport when we exit Colombia again. Assuming she and her daughter both receive there AP document, my question is this:

We are now married and all AOS documents for Sandy and her daughter have been filed. Will we need another document from the father again to leave the country? Furthermore will this be a requirement every time we travel there???

The child is only 17 months old and the father has never been part of her life. We where able to get him to sign the initial removal document based on relieving him of his financial responsibility to the child, (had to get a lawyer for this).

Any clarification here would be greatly appreciated!

But the good news is today I got approoooved!!! kicking.gif

Hi Steve and Sandy

Yes, you will need a document from her dad every time the baby will leave Colombia, she's Colombian and will always have to deal with this, I got divorced when my daughter was just 3, my daughter was born here, we went back to Colombia after my divorce for 8 yrs, she has dual citizenship, her dad NEVER paid child support, I fell your frustration, it's very disappointing having to ask someone who had never care for your baby to sign a permit, BUT..... I learned that carrying an American passport you don't need this document from the parents at all, so what I did when I came back to live here in the US is that every time my daughter went to Colombia I sent her just with the American passport, and never again I had to deal with this issue again, unless she would stay for more than 3 months (that's another issue) when your wife becomes an US citizen, the baby will have an US passport at the same time and if things don't change, you guys won't have to deal with this anymore.

Good luck.... Ana

A&D,

Congrats on getting forwarded to the embassy. Our approved petitions are on their way to NVC and should be there any day. What is this extended review about? I thought that NVC didn't do much processing on K visas. Did they explain why they were doing or exactly what it entails?

Good luck getting your interview quickly.

Well...NVC customer service didn't really go into details but they said that some applications are a looked at a little more than others. Since it goes through security name checks I guess they must have seen something in either Andres' or my name...Dunno really what but thats why they took so long.

Im not the first to have to go through the same...Cameron and his fiancee had the same problem.

I hope you get in and out of NVC quick! Maybe we'll be in Bogota at the same time!

Hello again, all!

We got a NOA2 recently-- very glad and thankful for that. Now it's time to really think about the part of the process that will take place in the foreign country.

We are concerned about a document called "Certificado de movimiento migratorio del DAS", which is supposed to document my fiancée's travels in and out of Colombia for the last 10 years:

1. Is it really required for the issuance of K1 visas? (if not, the other questions are not relevant)
2. Can it only be obtained in Bogota or is it also available in other Colombian cities of considerable size?
3. How long does it take to get it?
4. What is the fastest way to get it?

Thank you for your input and good luck!

Hi, The certificado migratorio is required for K1 visa applicants. If you live in Bogota you can receive this document in a matter of days. If you live outside of Bogota it can take 2 to 3 weeks to get. You can apply for this document at your local DAS office. You should go ahead and have your fiance apply for this document asap as well as all of the other required documents that you will need in the near future.

You can also have your fiancée go to her local DAS office, apply for the document and pick it up in Bogotá.

Hello all,

I am in a bit of a panic. blink.gif I ruptured my achilles tendon playing basketball on saturday. I have surgery on Wednesday. The Drs. told me they dont want me flying for long periods of time due to blood clots. They told me that they want me on the ground for at least one month ( they said with flying it increases your chances of developing one and it could possibly travel to your heart or lung and cause death). aaaaaaaaaagh. unsure.gif Here is where I need the collective expertise of all you guys.

Our interview is scheduled for April 17th (two weeks after the surgery). I so want to be there with my love this is killing me(you all can see in my timeline how long I have been working on this), innocent.gif but I would not be any good to either of us if I am dead from a blood clot.

I have a letter from the Drs. with this information detailing there concerns addressed to the US Embassy Bogota. I want to call to see what are the draw backs, or options...will it hender or hurt our chances for approval. They have all the documents, They have over 50 pictures over the past 18 months (holidays, vacations, etc) we have another 200 with her to take to interview, we have copies of the flights I took almost every month to Bogota, we have phone records with bills as high as $750 month, we have letters from our minister, emails, skype phone calls etc. The only thing she doesn't have is a copy of my taxes for 07 because I wait till the last day to file because I own my business. I was planing on bringing a copy when I arrived in 2 weeks for the interview... wacko.gif I am so stupid I should have wrapped my self in bubble wrap until the interview, what a bone head thing to happen now mad.gif .

I am look for any advice or direction...can anyone help me in what to do to ensure we have a good chance a approval.
Can I be on the phone, video conference, instant messenger or something? I need her here with me. crying.gif

Thanks!

But if she applies for the document today and gets it in April but her interview is in June, would there be a problem? Is there a validity timeframe?

Best of luck!

I believe it is valid for 1 year. There should not be a problem at all. Good luck!

Oh Santa Marta!!

I dont know what to say! But you know that everything happens for a reason! yeah it sucks that you got hurt but the important thing is that you need to heal so you can be their for your girlie when she gets here...

You are more than prepared for the interview!! Dont sweat it! People get approved all the time without haveing their Petitioners there... Some even say it was pointless for them to be there because they weren't even asked a single question!

Dont worry and have faith! Everything will turn out alright!

I need her here with me. crying.gif

Please help

Santa Marta,

Don't sweat it, things happen and not everybody gets to go to the interview with their SOs. If for some reason the CO feels the need for you to be there they will only delay her visa until you show up and then they'll approve.

Don't worry about things you can't control and that haven't happened yet nor things that won't happen.

Hi All,
My fience has been waiting on packeage 3 for several weeks. today I called DOS at 202-663-1225, option 1 then option 0. I was able to confirm that my package arrived at the Bogota Embassy around March first. I was also able to confirm that during the first week of March the Bogota Embassy did in fact mail package three to my fiancee. This package was NEVER recieved at my fiance's home.

UPDATE... In reading some of this thread, It would appear that i may not need to oficially get the package 3... I have a copy of my friend's package from his interview in Bogota a few weeks ago and I know what was in his K-3 package. Is the K-1 package the same? Can I just go by what his package said was required and send that through courier and fax to the embasy?

Stateside,

Use the package 3 that is on the Bogota Embassy's website. It will more than likely be the same thing....

You need 4 things total to send to the Embassy and request the interview.

1. Cover letter
2. Copy of beneficiaries passport (bio data page especially)
3. DS-230 part 1 only
4. OF-169

Thats all you need! Fax it ASAP so you can get skip a month of waiting and get your interview quick!

Embassy package 3 website is: http://bogota.usembassy.gov/appt-package.html

If you need some more instructions look at page 111 of this thread. In the middle there is a posting of lucho that has all the detailed info you need for the shortcut!

Good Luck! Maybe we'll see you at the embassy the same day! We are waiting for the Embassy to receive our petition!

I have a quick question for all of you...especially those who know Bogota well.

Since I haven't spent much time in Bogota and Andres lives in El Valle....does anyone know a really good restaurant to celebrate in after the interview? Andres and I were talking and we really have no idea as to where to go.

Any hint on clubs, bars, restaurants that would be great....we are already thinking of doing the basic tour while on our days off while im there...(museo de oro, maloca, monserate...touristy stuff) but if you have any recommendations that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance...

Hi Faith11

My husband came two months ago with a K-3 as well, go for the cheapest, ironically as I understand, round trip has a lower cost.

It depends on what kind of place you are looking for.... Bogota has it all!! My husband loves a place call Andres Carne de res, this is a unique place the thing is that is out side Bogota (in Chia). In the city you could go to El Salto del Alngel, located in el Parque de la 93 (that is you are looking for dancing as well as dinning) but let me know what type of food/place you are looking for.

We were just like you and wanted to celebrate after we ran a few errands. Then for some reason we ended up by the Outlets and there is a restaurant called... dang I can't remember. Something Criollo. And we decided to go in just for kicks and had the best Colombian food I've ever had. I had the mute soup and it was out of this world, I had never had it before but it was unbelievably good.

Not sure if it's a place you choose to celebrate but we ended up there by mistake and had the most memorable meal. We still talk about it to this day.

Got it! La Parrilla Criolla. biggrin.gif

Not fancy or anything but really good food. I couldn't picture myself celebrating with anything but Colombian food really. American junk is everywhere here anyway.

Oh...that sounds good... Something like this would be ideal.. Since im Colombian, Colombian food would be the only thing that interests me when Im over there...something very tipico would be perfect.

Where is La Parrilla Criolla?

Anyone have any other recommendations?

Thanks again,

I know Medellin better than Bogota but as was mentioned earlier the parque 93 is a nice area, it is lined with different restaurants and bars, you could walk along the outskirts of the park until you find someplace you like. There are some upscale restaurants in that area, there's also a T.G.I.F's near the park, but it doesn't sound like your interested in that.
Also if you are looking for somewhere to have a drink one night and maybe something to eat you might want to consider going to Centro Commercial Santa Barbara, it has a rustic feel to it and during the weekend there are a couple of small bars that have live guitar music, it's outside and the tables are lit with candles, it's a nice place for a couple or a small group of friends. The atmosphere is good but the food is average. If you do go, dress warmly and get there early, as all the good tables fill up fast.

Good luck, Mike

I am in Bogota and I go to Miami with Bella and the kids tomorrow. Much to my surprise we need to leave the apartment a day earlier than expected and I need to find accomodations for tonight large enough for 4 adults, 2 kids and a ton of suitcases at a reasonable price. I already sent an email to Bogota Colombia Lodging (colombianservices@yahoo.com) but they have not responded yet. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!
