Hi all,

Me and Irene were thinking about going to Niagra Falls at the end of august. She has her conditional pr
card. Can she enter Canada with that. She has sent her passport to the Malaysian embassy for renewal
so she does not have that now. I looked at the webpage of the us embassy in Canada and it is not
clear. I also looked at the embassy of Canada website and the question was not answered..any ideas?

Till next year or so, a GC alone will be ok to visit Canada (and return to US).

A passport for American citizens is not needed true, but for citizens of other countries who have a green card, both the passport and green card are needed to prove identity and nationality.

She will also need her passport to re-enter the US, so you'll have to put that trip on hold I think.

greetings!!!

yes, i only showed my conditional greencard and there were no questions asked however my husband was asked to make sure that next ime he will need to bring a proof of citizenship as US Citizen will be asked to produce those documents at the border...but bec.. we didnt have and we only showed his licence...still the officer told us to make sure next time to bring it...either US passsport or US birthcertificate...

Current Requirements for Entry Into Canada.....
Alien permanent residents of the U.S. must present their Alien Registration Card, commonly called a “Green Card.”

The travel initiative requirements will be rolled out in phases. The proposed implementation timeline is as follows:

*
December 31, 2006 – Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
* December 31, 2007 – Passport required for all land border crossings, as well as air and sea travel.

Is this something new? When I first married my ex... about 10 years ago.. me, him and his brother (both Vietnamese nationals) went to Canada and neither of them had anything more than GCs. huh.gif

everyone is getting more pernickety on what is required to enter the country. As US has stepped up requirements, Canada does a tit-for-tat.

I am from the Niagara Falls area, just a tip on what to go see. Make sure you go to Niagara on the lake -- it is well worth the trip. What about Marineland, the two Casino's. Look for hotels on the outskirts alot cheaper try americana about 10 mins from the falls. And a great hotel. Take a walk by the gorge -- just unbelievable. Anything else you plan PM me and I'll tell you if it's worth it or not.

Thanks for all the info on going to Canada. I forgot about her getting back into the USA. ....I guess one of
the worst nightmares would be if she was allowed into Canda, but the US did not allow her back. I am tending to think that I may hold off on the trip to the falls until she gets her passport back. I do not want
to run any risk of that happening. Maybe I will be lucky and she will get her passport back before we go.
Thanks all...

I cross the border to Canada at least once a week and I need to show my GC and passport every time. If I only show the card they always ask for my passport. I think it's wise not to take the risk.

same here, earlier this year when we went on holiday to Scotland, and again when I came back from holiday in Canada, I had to show both my passport and my green card at US customs.

I think you'll get different answers from different people and their experiences from crossing the border. I believe it all boils down to what a particular customs officers is in the mood for when you happen to cross...lol. If I were the OP, I would honestly wait till his spouse's passport is in her hand because it is definitely better to be safe than sorry.

I do however, have a word of caution for the OP who is the USC- I hope that you yourself have your passport as well! When my husband (the USC) and I (the CPR) crossed the Canadian/American land border crossing at the beginning of July, coming thru American customs on the way back, I handed him my and my daughter's green cards and my hubby handed him his Virginia driver's license...what he has ALWAYS done for many previous years and it was accepted. The officer looked at our green cards then at me and my daughter's faces, smiled and gave me back the cards and then said to my husband "Yeah, I have a driver's license too - do you have your passport?" laughing.gif Luckily, we had ALL our passports with us but I just thought it was SO funny that it wasn't ME who had a hard time but my USC hubby! whistling.gif
So have your passport as well as your wife's at the ready, ok? biggrin.gif
Lou Lou
Again, it depends on the border...my USC ole man crosses with me every time and has never been asked for his passport. They always ask where he lives though. I think they're used to the locals nipping over the border and don't bother so much.

In addition to Sharon's post.. If you (The USC) dont have a passport, a photo ID and a birth certificate will do as well.. My husband does not yet have a passport and for now his BC still works...

I kind of think that the free travel back and forth is only given to citizens of the US or Canada. Even this will change at the end of the year when passports will be required.

If you are from a third country then you will also need a passport. I would not try to re-enter the US with only a green card without a passport also. It may work, or it may not....I dunno.
