In a recent thread I read that a customs official told one fellow that he could have filed his EAD along with the initial K1 petition. Has anyone done this? We are about to submit the forms this week and I am wondering if this form (I belive it is the I-765) should be sent in as well.

Not that I've ever heard. Doubt it.
For a K1 you file for your EAD after marriage, you file for it along with your AOS>
