Yes i know but will it affect your chances of getting a job when you have to explain what you have been doing for the past 5 months since you moved here.

It shouldn't matter at all. Employers aren't supposed to discriminate like that...not saying it doesn't happen though. Best of luck finding something.

Waiting for Employment Authorization. I actually found employment before my new employment card came in and had to wait until I could start working. My employer was just as eager as I was, asking me each week if I could start yet, so for the right job it won't be a problem. It also shows that you are law-abiding:-). Good luck on the job search

They will understand and appreciate you being honest and not getting them in a heap of trouble or headache with the gov't. If they did give you a problem...well they aren't the sort of peopleyou want to work with anyway

galwayman,
Neutral. You've just been obeying the law. Turn it to a positive by telling them the activities that you've engaged in to prepare yourself for working in the USA, and for their company in particular, while waiting for your employment authorization.
That is how you spent the time - isn't it?

Waiting for permission to work in the US... it's not like the stupid paperwork is an overnight thing - it takes months and months to get and in the meantime you have to twiddle your thumbs...

My fiance (then husband) will safely be able to say - home improvements, yard work

and waiting for work authorization.

Sitting in front of the tv eating bon bons all day and putting on weight...lol.
Seriously I told them I was waiting for work authorization and also becoming acclimated to the area. The odd time I threw in about painting the interior of the house and yardwork (which was the truth).

i would point out all the productive things... i've been brushing up on my typing skills, designing my webpage, working on my photography, reading, did a few of those brainbench test thingies...
i think its nicer if you sound busy. that way the employer won't think that everytime you get a spare minute at your desk, you'll be playing minesweeper or picking at your toes.

well at least if you're sitting there picking at your toes they'll think you're concerned about personal hygiene

My first few interviews I just said I was waiting on immigration to process my EAD. Honestly, I don't think they need to know anything more except your work history.

I wouldn't worry about justifying what you have or haven't been doing since arriving in the US. I had a full work history up until the point I arrived in the US and the gap between my last job in the UK and any interviews for new jobs once in the US could be explained in just 5 letters... USCIS !! If you cannot legally work in the US until being granted an EAD then there is ALWAYS going to be a break in employment history. You have NOA's to show you haven't been "lollygagging around" to coin a US phrase so I wouldn't worry about it.
