Well I just signed up via the web at www.vonage.com and I got the unlimited minutes package, so calls anywhere to the USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, and some parts ofEurope are free and unlimited, even to cell phones!!! The first month was free, but you have to pay some connection fees, and I opted for the more expensive vonage device. So the sign up fees were about 90 dollars. You can get the free vonage device that can be used without a phone, mine has a phone so it was $50.

I sent it to him and he connected it (comes with instructions). It's quite easy though, its just an adapter that connects to your dsl modem and then connects to the PC. We had to do some slight manueveing bcz of the type of DSL set up he had, but thats it. It stays connected even if the PC is off, so it's just like having a second phone in the house. He has called me 20 times today, lol. The other thing is we had to upgrade his DSL speed to get better sound quality. Its quite cool and saves sooooo much money. good.gif

No its just one account, and he is using it. He can call any number now because he has a USA number that can call anywhere in the USA which include cell phones. I can call him from home or work or my cell phone. I have free long distance on my cell phone too and since its a local area code for where I live, there is no charge for me to call him from home or work. star_smile.gif

However you can get another phoneline for yourself. Its only 25 bucks a month which is alot cheaper than most phone companies. It comes with all the bells and whistles too. In addition to that, you get free long distance calls to Canada, USA, Puerto Rico, and parts of Europe, unlimited, anyday, any time all included in the price. good.gif

Well his Aunt was in town so I sent it with her. star_smile.gif Well I think "technically" it shouldnt stay there permanently, but they have several products that are marketed to use internationally for "travelors". star_smile.gif

What do you do if they don't have a PC at home but can get a DSL line? Can it be connected just to the DSL line?

I think so, but there is some software that needs to be set up initially to get the modem running, so you would need a laptop temporarily at the very least. However I dont think it would be a good idea without the PC.
samir_shannon
that is sooooooooo cool! i wish samir could do that but most algerians dont have an internet connection at home. they go to a cafe net.
