Full Version: Can't decide whether IR1 or K3
VisaJourney.com > Family & Marriage Based Immigration (K1, K3, IR1, etc) to the USA > IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Procedures

My wife in the U.S. is about to file the K3 for me until she heard that there's not much difference in processing time with IR1. Can anyone share us their thoughts, perhaps actual experiences in this issue. Hoping to get feedback from you soonest as my wife and I will be deciding next week.

Thank you very much and regards to all..

hi Stephen + Elisha,

thanks for sharing. pardon me but do you mean we go for 1r1 instead of k3?

How long have you been married and where do you- the foreigner- live? In most cases your wife is right, the CR-1/ IR-1 is just as fast as the K3, plus it's cheaper and you get a green card right away upon entry into the USA. In some embassies, the K3 is still faster, but usually only a month or so, so hardly worth the extra hassle once you get to the USA.

If you can file for the IR-1 (married longer than 2 years) this is definitely the best of the spousal visas, as it leads to an 10 year green card upon entry.

If you have been married for 2+ years you can go with the IR1, otherwise I would file for the CR1.

WoW! Then definitely go with the IR1! There is also DCF if your wife has lived in your country for an extended period of time-but I'm not an expert on it.

K3 is a piece of crap compared to a IR-1.

NVC doesn't have much to do with the K3. They just forward it to your embassy. A couple years ago when I did the K3 it was a LOT faster. Not the case anymore. Cost more when you have to adjust status plus a pain dealing with adjusting status.

There are special circumstances where the K3 is a good choice. NVC and the Consulates follow the law.
