Captain Ewok
It is? still?
Scott & Lai
Now it is moving fine.....earlier pages were taking forever to load.
Captain Ewok
Do the slow periods last a few minutes or 10 to 20 minutes or longer?
Yodrak
Captain Ewok,

I think less than 10 minutes. And the periods of slowness are occuring less frequently than they were last week.

Captain Ewok
smile.gif. That is good news. I have something I can do that should get us more speed but I am trying to get a feel for how slow things appear to people now and if it is worth it. Feedback on this issue is very welcome!
Fuzzness
it's been seriously slow today
Captain Ewok
I am still tracking down what is causing the intermittent problems .... on a good note, I think I may have just found the problem smile.gif. Te fix may result however in the "viewed" stats for each topic only being updated every once in a while and not in real time.
mary&tom
it's super fast at the moment... earlier today it sometimes wouldn't respond at all if i clicked on something
Captain Ewok
Seems like the "topic views" being updated in real time was killing the site. They are now set to update every 10 minutes smile.gif.
KarenCee
It's 9:24 right now and it's crawling like molasses in January.
Captain Ewok
yeah I found something that hung up the site a bit. I tried it on purpose a few times and it worked everytime. So the last few were all me! Problem is it is something members do sometimes each day (a forums feature)! I have changed a few things and I hope it helps! smile.gif

PS thanks for the update on the speed. Everyone feel free to add in info. The mroe I have the better I can figure this out! smile.gif
PlatyPius
It's always slow for me. I'm on dial-up. LOL

I've had delays recently of up to 2 minutes after hitting the reply button before it actually sends the reply and loads the updated page. (Normal for me is about 20 seconds). I've also received countless "Timed Out" messages the past 2 or 3 days. All other sites load fine, so I determined that it wasn't my connection.

I assume caching is enabled on the site?
Is logging turned off?
Does Invision let you change the "recent visitors" thing? I changed mine to every 30 minutes to speed things up (UBB)

I would consider the following (just my suggestions....not telling you how to run your board):

1) Further limiting image uploads. Some of the siggies here have images that are huge.

2) Removing the "reward" for posting space-filling crap. "Post-Booster" threads especially, but also the "I have more posts than you!" feature itself.

3) Cleaning out the member list (if you don't already). I allow an account to be dormant for 3 months, then I delete it.

That's all I can think of right now. Well, except for the fact that Invision just doesn't play well with the newer version of MySQL even on it's best day. Nothing you can do about that though, really.
Captain Ewok
Yeah I noticed that going to php 4.1.2 from 4.1.x slowed the site down a little.

I will post the my.cnf and httpd.conf settings if you are into it. I changed things to timeout faster recently (you may be getting those errors for that reason). I wanted to kill run away mysql processes so I set the timeout to 30 seconds. That may impact you. I can increase that if so smile.gif.

The big slow down is that we periodically are getting mysql queries "stuck" because another myysql thread is running slow. THat ends up creating a backlog of sometimes hundreds of mysql queries because the table is locked.

See the locked thread? Now imaging about 150 of those backlogged smile.gif. That is what is causing the recent slowdowns smile.gif! Looks like member 19486 (Iniibig ko si Luz forever) witnessed a slowdown in person!
GaryC
You got that right! Sometimes the site just stops altogether and it takes minutes before I can get in.
Captain Ewok
Yeah. I have been hitting my head trying to resolve this! tongue.gif
GaryC
Not to sound parinoid but, could it be an attack from outide?
Captain Ewok
Nope. I upgraded a few things this week (upgrades ussually mean downgrading things in the process -- wink.gif). tongue.gif
PlatyPius
I've been trying to reply to another thread for 1.5 hours. LOL I hit the "Add Reply" button, walked outside, sanded my screen door, came back in, and it was still sending. Went back outside, painted the screen door, came back in, ditto. Tried it again. Timed out. The entire site has timed out for me for the past hour. I've just now gotten back on.
Captain Ewok
yeah... it is bad.
Fuzzness
Ewok Ewok he's our man! If he can't do it no one.....will
PlatyPius
For the record, the site seems to be fine at the moment....
Captain Ewok
Maybe the magical "restart" fixed something smile.gif. I hope so personally. It would be great if thngs stay this way!
Captain Ewok
How is the site speed today? smile.gif With search turned off the server load has looked great so far (knock on wood)!

Attached is a graph if yesterday and below it of today thus far smile.gif. If search does end up being the issue at least now we have a direction to go in figuring it out!
William33
The site is running like a well oiled machine, no slowdown detected.

It was really slow this morning but seems to be working fine right now
Welshcookie
Haven't been able to log on at all since yesterday afternoon (UK time) although I have slept 7 hrs in between tongue.gif trouble logging on this morning and when I do get in it is really slow......don't know if this message will post but I will let it go and go to work laughing.gif

Keep up the hard work Capt good.gif
iceyspots
it is about 4 am eastern standard time.. I had some lags around 3 am...
Captain Ewok
Yeah 3 AM was expected. I re-enabled search. Lets see how tomorrow goes smile.gif. 3AM your time has some background tasks run daily smile.gif.
PlatyPius
Is there any way to turn off "similar topics"? I would think that would use up a bit of resources as it is going to do a search of the database for every topic view, whereas the "recent posts" thing is likely only used by a few....

Just a thought.
Veiled Princess
I didn't know anything about "Active Topics" until all this started but I've found it now and I likey tongue.gif
Captain Ewok
Server upgrade is in progress. Pardon any speed slownesss right now. I expect a small downtime in the next hour. Thanks!
PlatyPius
Okay Captain.

The site has been up and down more than a whore's knickers today....
Kajikit
Slow, slow, slow, slow sad.gif
Captain Ewok
I just upgraded hardware to get thinsg moving smile.gif. Lets hope this does the trick!
seldi
laughing.gif I clicked on this topic and the page froze as soon as it started loading
Captain Ewok
Are you serious?
Veiled Princess
It was slow and I got an error message a few times but now that I'm in it's zoooooooooooooming! good.gif
