I'm looking for a good thread on the benefits of a Canadian obtaining US citizenship. Also, I'd like info on having dual citizenship, and/or retaining Canadian citizenship.

Thanks,
Scott

Benefits to becoming a USA citizen: No more paperwork!!! Some governemntjobs one has to be a citizen, lot of poice agencies as well!! And for some jobs a USA citizen may not be able to get a high enough security clearance if their spouse is not an American citizen!

One does not loose their Cdn citizenship when they become an American citizen!! You will now have dual citizenship! Even though during the USA swearing in ceremnony it states something about renouncing ur other citizenship, it means nothing!

I'm sure if ya goto the Citizenship forum on VJ, you can find more info, as it has been brought up before. Best of luck

yeah, just check the Citizenship forum here at VJ, there are probably a dozen or more threads specifically about Canadians getting US citizenship.

Canadian law states that you cannot "lose" citizenship by taking a second citizenship. You would specifically have to renounce your Canadian citizenship at a consular post or in Ottawa.

American law however is a bit more fuzzy, its there, but it is currently not enforced that technically if you take the US citizenship oath you are renouncing all other alliances/citizenships and pledging to the US only forever and ever. So, its up to you whether you can choke that out or not wink.gif

It's not enforced because the US has no jurisdiction over how another sovereign country recognizes its own citizens.

So if you become a US Citizen, The US will only recognize you as a US Citizen, just as Canada will only recognize you as a Canadian Citizen when in Canada.

Plus:

Legislation cannot remove you from the country once a citizen. While on a greencard, there is always a chance that a past action could render you deportable. This is not theoretical - it happened some years ago to greencard holders with what were misdemeaner convictions.

Minus:

You will always be under the US umbrella for taxes. Tax treaties remove this sting in most cases, but not always.
