YEah cost of flights is the worst thing about getting a visa in summer. I usually just look on expedia but no doubt there are other places. I usually check all different dates etc until i find the cheapest.

Try http://www.airline-network.co.uk/ I have almost always found the best deals through them over the past 5 years, of travel from the UK to the US.

Sadly, as you say, this is now high season.

Good luck !! Neil....Now in NC.

Atlanta one way is currently £520 for the friday after my interview but i am worried about bookign until i have my visa.

I've always used www.travelbag.co.uk or ebookers.co.uk (they are in fact the same company). I have been checking flight prices for July and they are all rediculous - they start to reduce in late August. You'll find they're extremely competitive usually. But they don't have any trouble filling the flights in high season - normally we travel low season tho.

If you want to go in July you'll be paying around 1000 GBP return ohmy.gif If you find anything cheaper I'd love to know..........
jenart
Well I just checked and your destination is almost half the price of mine - just depends where you fly from.

On travelbag from MAN - JFK return it was 558

My destination is to Idaho in the west. So thats not too bad - taxes incl.

A little tip check the price for a return ticket they are quite often cheaper than a one way. Not exactly what you are suppose to do but just don't tell the airline you are not coming back.

If you get a return ticket make the return date a long time off, that way if you want to visit England you can use this half of the ticket good.gif

My one way ticket was much cheaper than a return. As long as you have a valid visa, the airline doesn't care about it being a one way. They also don't care if you don't use a return, but it is courteous to let them know so they can release your seat.

Check www.travelsupermarket.com

they do a check on major airlines and travel sites...

also as it was said before, look for a return instead of a one way, for some reason they are more expensive!

We booked ours to go to Houston with British Airways, it cost £893 for both. We will be flying in sept, which makes it a bit cheaper...

Ps. we also booked with BA 'cause their baggage allowance is still 2 x suitcases of 32kgs whereas the others are 23kgs

That's fine if yours was cheaper, I said it is quite often cheaper not always. I have seen just recently a case where a return ticket was £1700 cheaper than a one way, that will save me a lot of money.

The airlines do in fact care about it in the same way they will try and prevent hidden city ticketing. If you buy a return ticket which is cheaper than a one way you have deceived the airline into supplying you with a service at a price cheaper than they would have done had they known the correct circumstances. In the UK that is an offence under the Theft Act. Working at Heathrow I don't know of any airlines that has ever pushed it that far, but I do know instances where they have tried to recover the extra money and also stripped people of their frequent flyer miles. But they were what you might call repeat offenders. In the case of an individual buying a ticket in the situation those of us going to the US permanently would do they are not likely to even realise what has happened.

Anyta Holland
Didn't know buying a return was an offence if you were not planning on coming back! Will we get in trouble for this?
Lou Lou
I think there are some unecessary scare tactics here about return V single tickets. Now people are thinking they may get in trouble. I think they're more likely to struck by lightening. As long as the airline is informed, surely they can resell the seat and make more money? This really shouldn't have been raised here when it is VERY unlikely that anyone would get in trouble for doing this on a visa. It seems you've had the same argument a few years back, Lansbury http://www.thetravelforum.com/t88827.html
If you really think it is such an offence, surely you should recommend that people purchase a one way to avoid any 'trouble'?

Coming to think about it, think you are right.... I was planning on calling the airline and let them know thta we were not taking the plane back to the UK... Plenty of time in advance will surely allow them to resell and make probably double as much! whistling.gif

I don't know why I allowed myself to ge scared in the first place... Thanks Lou... yes.gif

Of course, call them when you are in the US and settled. Best to keep all options open wink.gif good.gif

Euro`s idea was good. Just book the return flight for as far in the future as they let you and make it a time when flights are cheaper so then you can maybe save too.

scratch the above as it seems they charge a fair bit more for such long times between flights. It is actually cheaper to get a one way ticket in my case at least.

It is not an argument it is my opinion based my professional knowledge and experience. My opinion is held by some to be wrong but that is their right to do so. It is not scare tactics it is a statement of what I believe to be correct and it is for people to decide for themselves what that might choose to do.

It is also not for me to recommend what others should do. I merely pointed that I consider it an offence under the Theft Act and I also pointed out that to the best of my knowledge no airline at Heathrow has ever chosen to pursue the matter. People are perfectly at liberty to make their own decision.

My personal opinion is that the airlines cannot justify charging more for a single trip than they do for a return and it people choose to exploit that loophole good luck to them. My professional opinion has nothing to do with what I consider justified or not.

Sorry you think it should not have been raised here or is it more that I choose to contradict your statement that the airlines don't care. If people think they may get into trouble because I have raised the matter, than good there is a chance they might especially if they placed a lot of weight on your ill informed comment. Book a return ticket by all means but at least now they know that it may be foolish to be open and let the airline know what they are up to. If you book a return with the intention of using it and then find due to unexpected and unforeseen circumstances you can no longer travel, no problem. Just know how to play the game before hand.

Back to topic..........Rose let me know as you search what you are finding. Best I have found so far round trip was 528gbp, mid August. We were looking into using our delta miles seems they have raised the international rate for airmiles by another 10k so we are just shy yet again of obtaining a freebie. Thought about using the miles for a one way, but wow what a loss that is!

If you had read my comments you would have seen that I suggested informing the airline AFTER one has entered the US, not before. I'm not that 'ill informed' no matter how you'd like to perceive it. rolleyes.gif

we've had great luck with aerlingus!!

try: DUB - JFK: july 13 - aug 30 - $446 (£245) round trip ($277 out + 277 return) w/tax= $651 (£358)

then grab a puddle hopper from LHR-DUB: same dates tickets as low as $19 (£10) round trip w/tax= $90 (£50)

play around with aerlingus ... make a great deal for yourself since your dates are flexible!! good.gif
