This is a great place to get information about your travel as well, as most of us have been there. Many that have not been there will say things that sound scarry.
Best wishes

My relatives are closed minded about alot of things. But I trust God in situations..they dont like idea of me traveling overseas..which im like geesh im 39 in July..ahhahahah...but preparations being made for a nice hotel for two weeks and such and you have to live life as destiny leads..in my opinion. Plus yanno people have issues with Internet relationships which i say..they no different than regular ones...i mean we talk on phone, up here and such..and its still getting to know a person..I tell them its about trust and using common sense..but anyway..i dont let anyone rain on my parade...and I hear crazy stuff about Nigeria..I put it under my foot and look forward to nice time. ..Thanks so much for the kind words..it helps to know like i said..its others thats going through and have made it..

Just want to add my welcome to the list and let you know that you can ask almost anything here and get an answer. Some aren't answers we want to hear, but they sure are what we need. You'll quickly learn that most here are like family and share a similar journey with you. I found this to be a place where I could go and not have to go to my nuclear family. Warm welcome again.

yes.gif yes.gif Hello Livi, I would like to welcome you to visajourney. I would also like to congragulate you on your engagement and your wedding. I laughed so much reading your story because it reminded me so much of my own. I still say to myself today as I did months ago before I decided to travel to meet my sweetheart in Nigeria. I would never have thought in a million years that I would connect and meet with someone way across the world in another country but that just goes to show" you never know what GOD has planned for your life". I can tell you from experience that I too had the same fate with co-workers family and friends and even the travel well clinic advising me of the dangers of making my trip. I can tell you that it went in one ear and straight out the other. I never feared for my safety and there was never a doubt in my mind that I would not be taken care of. If you feel that way now, I say you have made the right decision. I wish you well on your travel !!! dancin5hr.gif Please let me know if I can assist you in any way...........please believe me when I say the hardest part will be returning from you trip without your love one and wishing you could do something to expedite the proceedings.

Talk to you soon,

Welcome to VJ. I enjoyed your website. I just want to tell you that the hardest thing about Africa to me was leaving my baby in Africa. My baby is from Nigeria, but he has been attending school in Senegal. I went to Africa in January of this year and married my soulmate. I live in a small town and the people here think that you have lost your mind when you go to the other side of the world to be with your soulmate. We can't let people limit us. We serve a God that made the entire world and we just don't know what part of this big wonderful world that God is going to send our mate from. My experience in Africa changed my life. Not only did I meet the most wonderful man in the world, I went to a place that I wouldn't have thought in a million years that I would ever see. If anybody would've told me five years ago that I would go to Africa and get married, I would've told that individual that he/she had lost there mine biggrin.gif . We just don't know what God has in store for us, but through prayer and the Word of God, we will walk right into our destiny. Congratulations on your marriage and have a good time in Africa.

YOU'RE WELCOME!!!! (You will be hearing this form of greeting left, right, and center pretty soon, so I thought I would break you in! laughing.gif )
Livi, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog! (Yes, I must confess it was refreshing. I found myself reminiscing about my first visit and the multitude of feelings that I experienced--- Anxiety, in every affectation of the word probably best describes the feelings you have when you are meeting that 'special' someone for the first time. Heck, I'm getting anxious all over again, as I sit here and think about it, and its been nearly 3 years ago since our first encounter. laughing.gif
Anyway, I want to wish you a safe and happy journey. Congratulations and best of luck to the both of you as you celebrate your big day! kicking.gif

Ok ladies, I am so excited kicking.gif . It is so refreshing to be able to share my deepest thoughts and feelings about my journey. I have one lady in this area that I talk to that really understands what I am going through, due to the fact that her husband is from Nigeria also. He is here with her now and they are doing very well. This is truly a faith walk. Do you all realize that with the help of God, we have stepped over into a level of faith that most women are afraid to go because of what people may say or because of our own fears. I agree with you, having a man in my life that loves the Lord first has just taken my relationship with the Lord to another level. I have been married before, but I have never been in love like this before. My baby feels that same way. When you go to Africa, you will be treated like the Queen that you are.

laughing.gif Girlriend you aint saying nothing but the truth..I gotta laugh at myself..because I remember when I first started talking to JIDE..seriously there was a chemistry....but i was not accepting it at first..I was doing the logical thinking..OOKKK I aint met this man...im a grown reasonable sane woman....lmbooooooo..But its like a pull was there..then i said..OOK In a spiritual sense..either i done connected with my soulmate or in a spell...lmboo..lol..i know i wont under no spell..so after a while..I prayed..and I prayed..I said..LORD if this man not right..RELEASE ME PLEASE...I dont got time for mess..a.hhahahha..but he never was forceful..we just were friends..and he designed this graphic for my ministry and we talked about life and kids..i mean...really it was a unspoken freedom..and day by day..this man just pulled my heart..after a while of fighting...geesh..I had to admit..ok this not normal to most..but I love this man..ahahhahahah..Ok by then thats when it all began..

Right now i dont talk to negative folks or tell many what im doing..folks will put negativity in your spirit. I dont even allow it..Many people cant see the promise and the vision for what GOD has in your life. Abraham in the bible had to leave his family and go out on his own..I see myself doing that...They say im insane leaving States and going to unknown country..But the GoD i serve made me, Jide, The US and Nigeria..nothing hid from him..So what GOd shows you my sistahs stick with that..I dont care who dont agree...

I told my mother..YOu my mother and i understand from a mother me leaving for two weeks..but you gotta trust the GOD i know...and Im going to marry him..Yall accept it or not...whether you do or not..Im gonna stand by my husband..thats my view...Dont cheat your happiness with others opinions my sisters..They go to bed and sleep you up wrestling..>Nobody should steal your joy...

Jump out on blind faith..Its like you on a tall building...Close your eyes..reach out to GOD and JUMP..and right now...my JUMP is to NIGERIA..

Ok yall aint gonna get me writing all up here and gotta blog too..ahahahhh.can you tell I like to write..lol..ahahah

Hi girlfriend, I will meet you at the PM. But as far as the shots goes, I had to take the shot for yellow fever, hepatitis and tetanus. Pills were prescribed for Malaria. Now those were the shots for my trip to Dakar, Senegal. Someone else can inform you about Nigeria. My flight was from Atlanta, Ga. to Senegal, which amounted to about 22 hours roundtrip. My flight was very good. Talk to you later.

In addition to the shots mentioned here and Hep A and B, I also had to be current on my MMR (measels, mumphs and rhubella). I guess I didnt half to have that, but the travel place here recommended it. I took the malaria pills with me as well. I started to get a little sick toword the end of my visit, but was ok. I did eat meat, even though I was told not to (yummy). Drank only bottled water though.

For my visa, I had to send the letter of invitation, birth cert., fee, passport, the application, and some of those passport photos. I can't remember anything else.

I flew from JFK to Amsterdam through KLM. The food was pretty good, and I didn't have any problems. I dont know about everyone else, but I arrived in Lagos and wasnt able to see hubby untill after I went through customs and picked up my luggage. It seems like everyone has to wait outside for their loved ones. It was pretty scarry wondering around there thinking I had been abandoned.

Sorry this is getting so long, but there is one more thing. I didn't realize that Naira cannot be converted to USD too easily. When I left, I had thought about exchanging my Naira in Amsterdam or the US, but found out they don't do that.

Best wishes to you on your trip. I must admit I'm a bit jealous.

laughing.gif this trip is bringing so much out in me..seriously..I completely avoided plane all my life cept one one hr flight to MD i believe...now i have to fly across the world huh.gif ahahahhahah...Ok second..i cant stand heat cuz of allerigeis blink.gif ahhahahhah..so ummmm..I told JIDE yanno I better be treated like a queen..ahahhah..but nah i know he will...ahahahah.he sent me a cloth from Nigeria with his brother in law who i spoke to day...i cant pronounce name of cloth.....and they sewing me a dress...plus they coming from TX to meet my mom and sister.and bringing gifts...im sure my mom may change her tune a little..ahahahhahah..I though it was nice of them..i guess to represent Jide family......All this at times seem like a dream....yanno...so im enjoying it..and thanking GOD that it will come to past.

As far as vaccinations are concerned: Yellow Fever, Hep A, Hep B, Typhoid, TD, MMR, IPV and Meningococcal (only suggested necessary during the rainy season). I believe the total cost for Yellow Fever, and Typhoid, along w/travellers clinic fees was around $250. The remaining vaccinations can be obtained free of charge from your local county health clinic. Doxycycline was my choice antimalarial drug, however there are a few more that are available that are highly effective, but more expensive.
Don't forget to take a bottle of Avon's Skin-So-Soft and garlic capsules (1000mg/day). Wish I would have known blush.gif the magic tricks, but I found out a little too late from others whom had previously travelled to West Africa. Supposedly these items work like a charm in warding off the blood thirsty mosquitos. My baby gel oiled skin and perfume was the invitation they needed to tear my butt up! wacko.gif
Murtalah Muhammed Airport can be wild!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My first couple of arrivals were pretty cool, but the last was a hellish nightmare!!! Arrived around 7:15pm, the baggage conveyor broke and of course everyone was HOTTTTT and furious. So, everyone began to yell and protest. Next thing you know, the power was shut off on us! ohmy.gif So here we are standing in complete darkness for 20 mins. Finally, the lights were restored and slowly the luggage were brought in. Anyway, didn't exit the baggage claim until 10:30----Due to traffic congestion in the airport parking lot, we didn't manage to escape until 12 midnight wacko.gif Everyone here knows that it is very common for other cars to pin/block your car, so you pretty much have to wait until someone gets ready to leave in order for you to carefully maneuver your vehicle out.
It helps to make an advanced request for a special meal diet from your air carrier. I found that the low sodium works best to reduce swelling. Drink plenty of water also. During your layover in the airport make sure you do plenty of walking to get that blood recirculating in your legs & feet.
I lived in the Southeast region of the U.S. for 10 years, and I thought it was hot, but chile, U.S. heat index doesn't compare nor does it prepare you for what you are going to encounter over there. You will be asking yourself, "Is the heat turned on to HELL or what??? devil.gif "
Bask in the precious moments and know that you WILL be treated like royalty!

Welcome Jivi. Loved reading your stories on your website.

Don't worry about visiting Nigeria. I was a little worried but I had no problems. Your honey will take good care of you.

The heat was something else tho. I will never forget that heat. The plane ride was long. I was to excited to sleep so I watched movies.

Take care

Well, I was stuck in that insane airport scene with Tarionna (we didn't know each other at the time though) and let me just second what she wrote.....IT WAS CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!! And when the Nigerian powers that be shut the power off on us, it was DARK!!!!! Thick darkness like I had never experienced before. And HOT!!!!!! THAT was HELL!!! It was my first trip to Nigeria and believe me, I took a few moments of silence in that dark, hot room full of Nigerians to ask myself "What in the heck have I gotten myself into?" It was an interesting introduction to Nigeria for me. However, the hardest part for me was having to wait all that xtra, unexpected time before I could finally see my sweetheart. In spite of my freshening-up efforts in the airplane lavatory just prior to landing, I still looked like a dripping wet mop that didn't smell too good by the time I finally did meet up with Stephen. Truth be told, though, he was just going to have to get used to me lookin' like that and smellin' like that too because Nigeria is so hot and humid, I couldn't manage to look good for more than 10 minutes a day there. After that, well, just hand me another handkerchief. I was a sweatin' woman!!! I loved it all though. Nigeria is a great place!!! An interesting place, but a great place!!! By the way, my second trip to Lagos was not nearly that crazy in the airport so it has it's good days there at Murtala Muhammed airport too.

My husband always paid an airport employee to come in and meet me at the baggage claim to make sure I was safe until I got to his side. And it was always good for my husband to call the guy on his cell so I could talk to my honey as I waited for my luggage. It helps to calm everyone's nerves and I would suggest it to anyone travelling there--especially for the first time. It really does help.

Molly

Since your man won't have access to you, Tell your honey to make a sign bearing your name. Then he can dash the airport attendant to meet you before you enter customs, gather your baggage, and personally escort you to him. This is probably the best option, considering that you are going to be a little nervous. Because like another poster mentioned, there is a door that seperates the baggage claim from the waiting area... His chances of spotting you first are far more likely than you noticing him. However, 9 times out of 10 chances are that the door will be closed, so....... whistling.gif

I know what you mean about looking cute (and by any means necessary tongue.gif), but I declare its darn near impossible not to look like a grease ball, especially if you already have oily skin rolleyes.gif
Like Molly said, you will look cute for a hot minute, then you get to the point when you say, "Umph whatever, let me rock the MAC lipgloss,& eyeliner and call it a day. Don't worry, you will get a chance to freshen up and don those pretty eyeshadows etc. in the evening when the weather is really nice! Yeah, you guys will probably be at a local stall eating and hanging out nightly.

My sweetheart is also a Nigerian, currently in Lagos and I have known him for 5 years and made 6 visits to Lagos and seen most of the country. I did spend some trips mostly in the hotel and my last trip was kind of a nightmare due to lack of fuel and no generator use in the hotel during the heat of the day for a few days. I thought I was going to die!!! I always found the people in Nigeria very friendly and helpful and of course my honey was so protective that I did not worry about safety. The airport is ok after your first heart pounding trip and you get over that fear of the unknown. Im tall and blonde so I was very easy to pick out in a crowd in Lagos!!!!!! If you can get out of Lagos and go to a remote village, you will find it very pleasant!! Lagos is a new experience and one you will never forget. Oh, and last time we had a small mouse in the hotel. Now, that I can deal with but rats??? no way. 3 of my trips were in March and I would say that is one of the hottest, worst times to visit. My July visit was better but lots of heavy rain. My Sept visit was by far the best as I had just come from several months of Phx heat and I thought the temp was perfect!! I ate alot of chicken and rice, but tasted all the Nigerian dishes my first visits. One bit of advice, bottled water for EVERYTHING!!! the only visit I got sick was when I used tap water to brush my teeth and I really got sick for a week.

Now after all my ramblings, I'm happy to have found this site and would ask all of you with experience with the Lagos visa journey, which do you think is best and easiest?? The spousal visa route or the fiance visa??

Well my first visit to Lagos started off like Molly's. Segun prepared me for the whole light situation. My heart still stopped when they went off. 5 times they went off before my bags came down. I would not suggest the sign thing however its just not a way I'd go. What we did was I wore a bright yellow shirt and under a black suit(of course it was too hot for the jacket). Let me tell you I was the only one in the whole airport in yellow so he had no trouble spotting me. As it turns out he was LATE arriving to the airport. You will see the traffic is the worse I've ever seen. But the moment I saw him my heart just sang. It is a feeling I have never experienced before. Well I could go on and on about that part.
I do have a few things to say about your shots. Get them all! This is your first time traveling to a third world country and you will be there an extended amount of time. Also It is the rainy season so protect your body and your health.
Next just cause you are in love and finally with your man, DON'T LOOSE YOUR COMMON SENSE AND STREET SMARTS. Don't be too flashy with lots of expensive stuff. Thieves are universal and it pays to be on your toes. I hear snatch and grab crime happens a lot there.
Do not trust the tap water period. Use only bottle water even to brush you teeth. The micro organisms are what affect your body and you DON'T see it. They sell water in little bags (I had never seen that before) I did not trust them either. I trusted only bottled water. Well I have a few more tips but this is enough for now.

Hello,

Congrats on your engagement !!! I guess the advice that i would give you would be to make sure that you go to the America Embassey and Register yourself in. I only know of one case where there in the American part of the embassey there in Nigeria they have a " Have you seen me " poster of a america girl who apparently turned up missing. I didn't see the poster until I went into that room to register.

Also the people that work at the embassey are rude at best, so just ignore them, trying to talk with the Consular General is a big waste of time, they won't even attempt to call him for you, you just have to deal with the people working behind the desk there, and remember your not in America, Nigeria has it's own set of rules that's very different from America, but keep the embassey " help line " number with you just in case you many need to use it. I do agree with the others about the men treating you well and being overly protective of you while your there, however I chose to take a credit card with me for just in case situations, thank God I didn't have to use it.

Finally when in Rome you do like the Romans do. This may be helpful for you. Also if you don't get your hair braided before you leave the America consider getting it done there, it's very inexpensive and the girls are quick. They do a really good job !!!!

I have seen some on this forum getting the K1 pretty quick... 5 to 6 months, yet others seem to linger. Oh ya, and it would most likely be better to go for the Cr1 if you need a co-sponser, since some have been turned down for the K1 visas. We went the Cr1/K3 route, yet the Cr1 was processed much quicker and we eventually abandoned the K3.
Best Wishes

Cr1 is a for those who are married. You can also file for K3 of married. The difference...

Cr1 (form I130)..no AOS necessairy after entering the US , can work.

K3 (form I129f)...must file for AOS / work authorization after entering US.

Both must apply for lifting conditions before the 2nd anniversary of arrival in US.

We filed both and the Cr1 was quicker, but in general I think K3 is saposed to be quicker.
