I think i already know the answer, but i might give it a try anyway: before getting the much anticipated EAD, do you think freelance working would be acceptable?

Freelance work is still paid work and therefore is not allowed until you have your EAD. If you haven't received your EAD within 90 days of your NOA1, you can make an infopass appointment and apply for an interim one.

Any paid employment inside the US is not allowed without an EAD. Until you have that card in your hands you'll have to sit tight.
