does anybody know what to put for question 14 on the ds-156 form page 1? What is your national identification number? He is from pakistan and said they have some number they have for identification in order to get a passport and i don't know weather this is the number that they asking for on this question or not. Does anybody know?

I put my National Insurance Number there
Yodrak
Melo,

Why? The UK National Insurance Number is not a national ID number. The UK doesn't have a national ID number (although I understand that creating one has been proposed).

In any event, denali wants to know about Pakistan.....

I think the National Insurance Number is the National ID number... you need it for work, for your benefits etc.
Yodrak
Melo,

Exactly, quite similar to the US Social Security Number. Not a national identification system, which is used for keeping track of a country's citizens.

Does a non-citizen who is working in the UK ,or who may somehow be entitled to certain benefits by being resident in the UK, have a National Insurance Number?

Yodrak
Melo,

Stop posting inappropriate information. And don't worry about your visa application - the consular officers understand.

Boiler
UK National Insurance Number would be obtained by anybody with leave to remain.

Not quite the same as the US version as it has not been hijacked to become a national identity number, I would have to look mine up, I think I put it down as my Identity number, last time I had used it was 15 years before so took a bit of finding. From memory the only time I have needed it was in changing jobs and surgeries.

Boiler,

The US version (SSN) is also not a national identity number. The SSN is given out to, and asked of, many people who are not US nationals, not even US LPRs. It may be used as a defacto ID number for people who are in the USA and are (legitimately) working, paying taxes, and other activities, but such uses are not a national identity number.
