Hi Guys,
Just to inform you that PAL has decreased its maximum baggage limit from 64kg to 23Kg (not good) what the hell.. Good thing i havent bought my suitcase just yet.

PAL said that the said decrease was due to increase in fuel prices ( i thought they dont use diesel or unleaded, duh...)

... so guys instead of us paying for the excess baggage.. let us have a BIg Balikbayan boxes (full of our HINDI-ko-maiwan-walang-ganyan-sa-states-na-gamit) ready to ship either before we go to our POE or after depends on the circumstances. IT may take a month atleast before it will reach its destination so might as well get them shipped from here in the PI a month before we leave here...
Happy Trip everyone...
Proud to be PInay..

Try Northwest - they have bigger allowance for travellers to and from Asia... And if you have connecting domestic fligh in the US, it will still be okay. 2 pieces of 70lbs are allowed for check in.

it has been reduced, but not quite as much as you have stated.
from PAL website:
For tickets issued on or after 01 July 2008, the following Free Baggage Allowance shall apply:
For Journeys to/from the USA, Canada and Guam (Piece System)
Mabuhay (Business) Class
Maximum of two (2) pieces with a total dimension of 124 inches (316cms) and no piece exceeding 62 inches (158 cms). Each piece should not exceed 23 kilograms (50 lbs)
Fiesta (Economy) Class
Maximum of two (2) pieces with a total dimension 107 inches (273 cms) and no piece exceeding 62 inches (158 cms). Each piece should not exceed 23 kilograms (50 lbs)
so it went from 64kg total weight to 46kg total weight.

TRAVEL ADVISORY ON FREE BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE
50 POUNDS OR 23 KILOS LIMIT PER PIECE OF CHECKED-IN BAGGAGE TO AND FROM USA (INCLUDING GUAM) AND CANADA
· _
Following the lead of most airlines flying trans-Pacific routes, Philippine Airlines will start implementing for all tickets issued or re-issued starting 01 July 2008 a limit of 50 pounds (23 kilos) for each of the two pieces of free baggage on flights to and from the United States, including Guam and Canada. The Civil Aeronautics Board approved the reduction of the baggage allowance last 12 June 2008.
· _
Tickets issued before 01 July 2008- but for travel from 01 July 2008 onward - still entitle passenger to the erstwhile free baggage weight limit of 70 pounds (32 kilos) per piece.
· _
PAL is constrained to take this step as a consequence of record-high fuel prices that have adversely impacted the airline industry worldwide. The International Air Transport Association has forecast a massive global industry lost of $6.1 billion for 2008. In response, most major carriers have reduced free baggage allowance or imposed new fees for checked baggage as a way of easing operational cost.
· _
The 50-pound limit allows smoother connections for PAL passengers traveling to and from interior points in the U.S. and Canada, where domestic flights have already applied the new weight cap. Also, most U.S. carriers have limited free checked baggage allowance to only one piece, while some have eliminated it altogether, charging $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second.
Note:
As part of the Elite level privileges, Mabuhay Miles Premier Elite members and Million Milers can carry one (1) extra piece of luggage (not exceeding to 50 pounds or 23 kilos) when flying to and from the USA (including Guam) and Canada on Philippine Airlines.

well actually its no surprise since PAL has been planning to decrease their maximum baggage limit for months..and increase in aviation fuel(avgas) is the main reason..yes they dont use diesel or unleaded..its the reason that american carriers delta and united airlines merged..northwest's baggage allowance is more economical but it doesnt fly direct to LA so some passengers still fly PAL..
happy trip to you though..goodluck!!!

i called manila fowarders. they will drop boxes off for $5 each. and when the time comes, 1-2 week leas time, tey will pick up the shipment at $10/box. then they get it to LA. from LA to whereever your destination is is up tp you. they use fed ex, ups dhl etc. so for us it is about 150 per box. the airlines charge about 135 per box, ove rthe 2 checked bag. so it is worth the few extra dollars, not for maribel to have to push 6 boxes thru the airport.
i have also checked with american airlines and northwest. what ever the airlines leaving the philippines is, they have to follw the rules of the carrier going international

I don't think the person you spoke to got it right. I was told it was 32kg per bag. I even looked it up on the Northwest Airlines website just now and this is what is says:
International Travel - between North America and Africa / Asia / Europe / India / Middle East)
Coach Class: Each ticketed passenger is allowed two (2) pieces of checked luggage.
Exception for Coach Class International travel with a connection time of eight (8) hours or more that requires luggage to be re-checked for a flight within the US, Canada, Mexico and Caribbean: Each ticketed passenger is allowed one (1) piece of checked luggage (see below for details)* Each piece: 50 pounds (23 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm).
Exceptions for trans-Pacific travel wholly between U.S./Canada and the Philippines, China and Hong Kong, checked pieces may weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kg) each.
Hope this helps! I'm gonna print a copy of the page from their website and then pack up to 32kg per bag.
