City/Town Cams!

Just to see the live action as it happens in my old town. I go there every day just to see what the weather is like, and if anything is different.

Anyone else do this? And if so please share your city camera site with us. smile.gif

When I first moved here, there was a video cam set up outside the Capitol Theatre restoration project on the main street of Chatham, Ontario. I used to click on the cam and just watch the traffic go by. They have since removed the cam and I haven't succeeded in finding another live view camera set up anywhere, but I go and read the newspapers regularly (a daily, a weekly and an online weekly) as well as check out the radio station and upcoming events through the official website: http://www.chatham-kent.ca/default.htm#

I do, however, still check the Kingston webcam - that is where I grew up and I still consider home. http://www.kingstonkiosk.com/directory.php...;categoryId=225 If you look at the far right hand edge of the far right corner of the cupola on City Hall you will see an older building front - I used to live in that complex - my actual apartment is hidden behind the cupola but the view from my living room windows was of City Hall and some of the farmer's market behind, and the view from the bedroom window (overlooking a few buildings) was of the Kingston waterfront and Lake Ontario. My apartment was originally built as the Bank of Upper Canada in 1828 - it had 6 ft thick limestone walls and I loved it! It has a long time since been converted to a restaurant and bakery - what was my apartment is now the pastry kitchen for the restaurant. Still, I love to look at the webcam.

I still read all of the local newspapers as well:-).

Aww thanks sweetie!!
I'll be checking that out for sure!!!
Kathryn41
hehehehe - of other note - I am fascinated by volcanoes, and I regularly check the volcano cam for Mount St Helens http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volcanocams/msh/ as well as the various seismographs around the world - here is one of the most basic ones http://www.iris.edu/seismon/

(Didn't mean to hi-jack the thread - just that your post about checking cams on a regular basis also reminded me of these).
Sprailenes
Ahh other cams I do check out is: http://www.libraryghost.com/

I have yet to see anything but I still like to check it out.

I miss Windsor Ontario, but I can not go back now even it is just one hour drive from my home to Windsor.

Once I get AP, the first thing that I would like to do is go back Windsor!

They don't have a windsor cam? sad.gif I looked online and couldn't find one.

Here is the Windsor cam:

hmm- it may not work . .

I always watch the Parliament Hill cam because I used to live on the street that ended with the Parliament buildings at the end.
Sprailenes
When I was in College, the barrie cam used to be live and I used to tell my fiance (who was just a friend then) to watch the one by the library (because I lived right by it) and I'd walk down and do a cart wheel so he'd know it was me.

Yea I know its pretty sad but thats what I used to do. lol.
thetreble
Actually thats a really cute idea. laughing.gif I never would have thought of that.

this is all I have found so far from my town, Chilliwack, BC..

I would always use Cams Across Ontario but they no longer have the Oakville and Burlington waterfront cams on there. sad.gif I was able to find the Burlington Waterfront Webcam on another site, so sometimes when I'm homesick I will take a look and see if I can see anybody I know. laughing.gif The Burlington waterfront was just down the street from my house, so I would always walk there. They had some awesome festivals too. I have big regrets about selling my house. sad.gif Looks like a nice sunny day in Ontario today! laughing.gif

apparently there are no web-cams anywhere near where I grew up in Stouffville, though they of course have links to all the GTA MTO traffic cams.

I rarely read the Stouffville news, unless a friend who still lives there sends me something. I usually just read The Star. And I have not ever checked any of the TO web cams, unless someone here has posted something.

Hi! Not trying to hijack the thread...this is all very interesting to me. The live feeds, that is. Is this something new? Does it seem intrusive to you? I like the idea. Pretty cool. I am not sure if we have cameras set up anywhere in the U.S. like this (other than the ones the local police use for traffic tickets). My husband and I have been considering moving to Canada, Toronto to be exact. So I have been checking out some of your threads.

Anyway, back to the camaras... good.gif
Reba
Its nothing new, and yeah, they're all over the US too. Its not like they're poking into people's homes, usually its just traffic cams and tourist traps. I usually check out the ones here in the mountains if I'm heading up there, just to see what the weather is.

Thank you, thetreble and Kathryn41, the cam does not work but I will keep eyeing on it until it works. Sometimes I use Yahoo Maps Satellite to find if there is any change, but not live and detailed.

Go to the Cams Across Ontario site and pick Windsor at the end of the drop-down list. smile.gif

I love Windsor. It's what Detroit COULD have been.

I have some web cams that I check, but they're in the US of course.

yeah that picture is amazing....open land, bright blue sky...very nice

I try not to do the ones from Ottawa very often because it does make me incredibly more homesick that I already am. (ie. I just saw the cibc bank I used to bank at in Ottawa and got a creepy feeling in my stomach sad.gif )

Since I just quit my job, and probably won't be starting a new job until next week, I might have to take a trip to Ottawa by myself this week for kicks. It's been 2 years and a bit since I have been there. I think I am long overdue.

Wooh, Marilyn - I've been to Steinbach! In 1979 I was working in Saskatchewan on a National Museums of Canada contract while a friend of mine was doing the same in Steinbach. She was billeted with a Mennonite family there and working in the Museum. I visited her - and actually submitted one of the photographs I took there to a National Film Board of Canada competition called 'Sites of History' - and it won. Cool!

Here near Atlanta there are webcams set up at regular intervals along the highways going through the City. We check them pretty regularly to get the idea of traffic flow and to help us plan routes to/from Atlanta or points going through the city. There is so much construction going on right now that these live cams are a godsend, and if there is a hold up due to an accident (a far too regular occurence) we can plan alternate routes.

Closest cam I'll get to my hometown is going to be North Bay ON. Cochrane only has a population of 5,000 and have no street lights at all.

I'll have to keep checking the homepage for Cochrane to see if anyone is updating it (probably not) and reading the paper online to see what is happening. I do talk to my daughter daily and my sister every few days.

I have a lot of people on MSN that I can chat with too. I just have to remember the time difference of an hour between here and there.

I get emailed Saskatchewan news via CBC each day. On the news page, there is a webcam of both Regina and Saskatoon.

Althought this comes close:

and click on "street view" at the top of the map (just above Winnipeg). Doesn't cover every city and street (yet), and it's not a live feed.... but if you think Uncle Sam isn't watching, think again!! blink.gif

Yup. If you search out my house, you can see one of my cars (Mags' car, actually) as well as our house before we ripped the crap siding off and painted it. Luckily, you can't see the license plate numbers. Actually, looking at the laundry room/kitchen door window, I think I can see Mags in there at the counter dishing up cat food.....

I use http://www.cbc.ca/news/photogalleries/webcams.html when I want to check on weather and such and yes I also have http://www.2ontario.com/webcam/home.asp bookmarked.

Now off to see volcanoes, more my type of cam...

Finally! I've been trying to get an actual pic on that VolcanoCam for days now. Not much happening, though. I guess I'll come back when it starts to get a little more active. laughing.gif

There was one Africa webcam I used to look at all the time. It was on a watering hole in a nature reserve and you could see the animals come to drink. But I've lost the link and can't find it anymore. sad.gif
