i recently moved to the u.s and have read it is best to wait 2 weeks till i apply for a ssn is this true? also do i need a ssn to get married? thanks for your help.
Yes, it is best to wait so you know you're in the system but maybe you can contact someone to find out. It's important not to wait too long either.

the guides indicate: "You should wait 2 weeks after you arrived in the US before applying for a SSN."

as for whether you need one or not to get married, you'd have to check the state laws of where you'll reside, as there are 50 states and 50 different requirements.
No need of SSN to marry in US.
