My wife and I went to the DMV yesterday to try to get her a learner's permit or non-driver ID card.

She had her passport (in maiden name), her SS card (in married name), and our marriage certificate (which has her maiden name and married name).

Apparently, this wasn't good enough. She said the names on the SS card and her passport don't match. WTF? I showed the "lady" our marriage certificate which makes a pretty convincing argument that my wife with her new name and old name is the same person.

She told us to go get a new SS card, with her Maiden name and new name (both) on it.

Has anybody heard of anything so completely ridiculous? I hate dealing with stupid these civil service employees with their attitudes.

this is the exact reason why I didn't bother to get mine until I had my EAD and NOA of my AOS. Though they still asked for my ssn, marriage license, passport ( all 3 docs. are in my maiden name), but they give more credit on the validity of the immigration documents.

Exactly. If you want your married name on your ID card or drivers license, it's much better to wait until you get your EAD. Otherwise, most states will not do it.
