Hello,

This may be a really dumb queastion but I can't find the answer on any other government websites. If someone is pregnant in the United States on a K3 visa do they qualify for Medicaid? I was under the assumption that this is social assistance and your sponsor signed an I-134 saying you will not use any social assistance.

Someone told me I would be eligible once I get a social security number but I just didn't want to apply for it then get a bill in the mail for all the doctors visit/hospital stay etc.

Thanks

Meicaid is a means tested benefit. You may get granted the benefit, but your sponsor may then be required to repay the government.

There are places that you can go for prenatal care that do a sliding fee scale. They are not government assistance and your sponsor would not have any obligation. You may also want to look into the cost of self insurance and see if that is feasible if you are uninsured. Your child however would qualify for medicaid once born if you have no other insurance available to you.

Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy.

Ouch this is a tough situation. Many insurances may treat pregnancy as "pre-existing condition" if you did not have continued coverage in the US. I'd read any self insurance pretty carefully if you are already pregnant. Good luck either way!

Emergency Medicaid is allowable even though it is means tested. If you have no other way to get medical care call up the local office and see what they have to say. Honestly from what I've encountered most people have no clue how immigration falls in with benefits but at least look into it.
