Hi all ,
we are about to file for our AOS.We are adjusting for B1/B2. My hubby is from India and he doesnt have a inetrnational driver`s license. I am teaching him driving everyday at a abadoned mall parking lot. Now I am interested to know few things that I am not clear of :

i) How to get a Learner`s permit for him so that he can drive on roads with me beside him ?? We are at Ohio . I checked this site but nothing is mentioned of whats needed for foreigners . http://www.bmv.ohio.gov/driver_license/dl_info.htm

ii) What are the documents needed ? As we are adjusting from B1/B2 he wont have a SSN very soon......so any idea what all are needed ?

iii) What have most people here done regarding car insurance ?? I have heard they wont give him a license if you dnt have a insurance ?? What insurance is cheapest ?? I do have one !

Thanks

Hi,

I'm in Ohio too so I will try to help as best as I can!

1) To get a learner's permit he will need either his EAD card or his green card, and a social security card. He cannot get a permit until he has these things.

2) I'm not sure if it's different if he is adjusting from B1/B2 because I adjusted from K1. However, it still stands that he will need SSN and EAD/green card before they will give him a permit. This will likely mean a couple of months of no driving sad.gif

3) Regarding car insurance, my hubby added me to his policy so I never did any research. The premium didn't go up much though. We first put me on the insurance with my UK license (which is odd because I couldn't drive on it but I did have insurance!). Check with your insurance company first and explain the situation, and if their rates are too steep then shop around. Hopefully someone else can give you better advice on the insurance situation.

Good luck, I hope his EAD comes soon so he can start driving! It's very frustrating in those couple of months while you're waiting and can't drive anywhere or work but it soon passes.

They told me to bring SSN and either EAD card or green card, whichever came first.

I am new to this country and I wish to obtain a driver license, do I qualify?

A23:

An individual must present the appropriate U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) documents to obtain a Non-renewable/Non-transferable driver license or identification card in Ohio. Please review the Non-renewable/Non-transferable driver license for further information.
